Passionate and honest American music. Stiles has got style, September 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sanctuary (Audio CD)
"Sanctuary," the debut album from J.L. Stiles, is a wonderful collection of blues, folk, and jazz inspired songs. Lyrically, Stiles's tunes are sophisticated, honest, and heartfelt renderings of classic blues themes- love, faith, isolation, and injustice. Musically, Stiles pays homage to the influences of legends like Mississippi John Hurt and Jimmy Reed, yet in a way that is fresh, contemporary, and definitely his own. The album's standout songs include "The Mainstream," "The Difference," and the title track "Sanctuary." Indeed, "Sanctuary" is at once haunting and extremely catchy. You'll be singing it for days. Overall, Stiles is a talent who shouldn't be missed and the album "Sanctuary" is a must buy for fans of genuine American music.
