I did not like Brynn. I thought she was whiney and selfish. She was going through an unsual circumstance and that would make anyone emotionally unstable. Her world as she knew it had completely changed. Her sister was a werewolf and Brynn was surrounded by werewolves. I didn't think Brynn had any redeeming qualities. I was hoping by the end of the book, I would like her. Didn't happen. Is it wrong that I was hoping she would die? LOL! She resented everyone who was trying to protect her. She didn't appreciate the fact that Abby was trying her best to make sure that she stayed safe. Brynn felt like she was a burden. She needed to get over it. Her life was in danger. And when Abby needed her most (the first time), Brynn was unable to be the sister/family that Abby needed. Brynn was quick to say, Keith can help her better than I can. Well can you at least try? Put forth some effort? Because she sure as hell put forth the effort to get into Joe's pants!

I was so happy when I was done with this book. I was not rooting for Brynn and Joe. I was hoping that Joe would come to his senses and leave her ass. After reading Cry Sanctuary with Abby being such a strong female character, I was really disappointed with Brynn.

I was lucky enough to score an ARC of Sanctuary Lost without having to sell my kittens into indentured servitude. I was doubly pleased that I enjoyed it so much.

The book opens with an attack on the werewolf community at Red Rock Pass. Brynn, a human, must flee the fight, feeling shame that she has to abandon her werewolf sister to the battle because she's not strong enough to fight the enemy weres. This sets the stage for some of the conflict in the book, as her anger at her helplessness in the face of a growing threat makes her consider the risk of becoming a werewolf herself.

Complicating things for Brynn is Joe. Joe's a dominant werewolf, ex-military and a little damaged from a prior relationship--enough to throw some serious sand in the gears of the budding romance between him and Brynn.

Brynn is a fascinating character. At first she feels somewhat isolated and disconnected from the werewolf community around her. Her growing connection with Joe both helps with this and at the same time further complicates things. Of particular interest to me was the internal conflict between Brynn's inner wolf, who was not dominant, and Brynn's human side, who was independent and headstrong. This leads to some very intriguing conflict, and I thought it was expertly handled.

Sanctuary Lost definitely falls into the paranormal romance category, and the focus is on the romantic arc more so than the backdrop of the werewolf war. This larger struggle in the werewolf communities carries on from the first book. There are some good fight scenes, but my only real gripe would be that I wanted to see a bit more werewolf combat.

Any way you cut it, Sanctuary Lost is a great read. Very well written, filled with complicated, believable romantic conflict, and definitely worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd like to move to Red Rock Pass!, August 19, 2010

Book 2 of the series is much stronger than the first one - no sophmore slump here! The characters are more fleshed out in terms of action and history and the dialogue seems more authentic. The story is definitely a continuation of Cry Sanctuary: Book 1 of Red Rock Pass series and I'd highly recommend backtracking if you haven't already read the 1st book. You need the background.

Joe and Brynn are an excellent couple. They are well matched and come across as believable. I was surprised that I ended up liking Brynn in this book (I already knew I'd enjoy Joe - too bad he's a character in a book!). Although she has moments of annoying behavior overall I felt like her struggle to find balance had a lot of emotion and heft behind it. As the book starts she doesn't really like herself much at all - she's a burden to all and seems to go through each day uncomfortable with who she is. Even after becoming a werewolf you see this same identity crisis - brought on even more by the conflicting nature of what her wolf wants.

The sex in this one fits perfectly in the story and never overshadows it. The werewolf politics remain front and center - where they should be if a war has begun. The bad guys are REALLY creepy and once things are fully revealed you realize just how terrible things are going to get.

I've already downloaded the next one and will be starting it as soon as this review posts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first, September 5, 2010

This is the follow up to "Cry Sanctuary" Cry Sanctuary: Book 1 of Red Rock Pass series. The first thing I'll say is that this was a better book- the story was smoother and the pacing was more consistent. It is a fast read and not the best example paranormal romance, but intriguing enough to keep me interested in the series.

Basically, this series is a solid werewolf romance series. There is something comforting in knowing what you are getting. Ms. Rogers manages to make the political landscape of this world complex enough to add a little depth, but the main story lines are reliable. If you are looking for a light read and hot, but not terribly complicated romance, you won't be disappointed.

I was not as drawn to the characters of Brynn and Joe as I was to Kieth and Amanda, but the plot in this book just made more sense. The decisions the characters made and the sequence of events were logical- unlike book 1 where I felt some things happened that wouldn't have if the characters had been smarter. Joe and Brynn are not as strong as the first couple and in places Brynn's more submissive nature can be grating. I think how you react to her might depend on how dominant you are as a reader. Me- I could understand how she felt about being weak, but I didn't identify with her inability to articulate this in any other way than being cranky. This is a bit of a drawback, but in the end it is offset somewhat by a clever bit of writing as her character develops. I won't give away any plot points, but I will say she becomes more interesting the more you read. I can't say it was resolved, but perhaps her role within this pack community will become more clear- maybe she will have some redeeming role and responsibilities that make her not being an alpha more bearable. It will be interesting to see how she develops in later books.

I enjoyed the second installment of the Red Rock Pass series even more than the first. When I first started reading I didn't think I could love Joe more than Keith. Was I ever wrong! His sense of humor did me in. There is just something about a guy who is sexy and can make me laugh. Present me with that combo and I'm a goner.

Sanctuary Lost is Brynn and Joe's story. Brynn is a law student who finds herself immersed in werewolf drama after she is kidnapped by a psychotic alpha. Brynn is young, sassy, and completely endearing. Joe is a total smart ass but in a charming way. You'll like it, I promise! The chemistry between Joe and Brynn is intense. It made this book difficult to put down.

The events in Sanctuary Lost are heart wrenching at times. The authors managed to make me feel an array of emotions in less than 150 pages. That is saying something about their ability to tell a story. It also contains everything I loved about the first book in the series. Romance, action, and fascinating characters make for a heck of a good book. This was a fabulous addition to a very addictive series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sanctuary Lost by Moira Rogers, April 22, 2010
This review is from: Sanctuary Lost: Red Rock Pass, Book 2 (Kindle Edition)
The second book in this series picks up right where book one, Cry Sanctuary left off. Brynn was kidnapped by an evil alpha, Alan Matthews as a repercussion for her sister Abby escaping after he turned her into a wolf. Abby, her mate Keith and another alpha Joe rescue Brynn in book one. Now Brynn, still a human, is living at Red Rock Sanctuary with her sister. She is scared, mentally trying to recover from the terror Alan put her through. Alan is upset, to say the least, that Brynn escaped with her life, and for the past three weeks, his wolves have snuck into the sanctuary and tried to attack. So far, they have been held back, but Brynn doesn't feel safe. What she wants is to become a wolf. She feels that way she would be harder to kill and everyone wouldn't have to worry so much about her.

Joe and his wolf are feeling very protective over Brynn. He is not against her becoming a wolf, as long as she realizes it is forever. He has reservations becoming her Guide, the person that is set to help a new wolf transition, because last time he was physically involved with his trainee, she left him abruptly and he took it hard.

With another attack on the horizon from Alan, Brynn must decide her future - does it include becoming a wolf, and does it include one sexy wolf as her mate?

I really enjoyed the fact that Sanctuary Lost continues with the war against Alan Matthews even though there is a new couple we focus on. I think Moira Rogers does a great job so far with this series and with the other series I read by them, Southern Arcana, to present a great romance, and also continue with the world building and events from previous books. They combine the two so seamlessly.

The ongoing theme in Brynn's life is to survive. She survived being kidnapped by Alan, she survives the first few weeks at Red Rock and then she must decide if she can survive as a wolf. She hates being weak and a target. She has feelings for Joe, and after she feels a bit more comfortable at the Sanctuary, she is not afraid to let him know exactly how she feels. I liked her attitude and the way she handles him. She wants him and eventually has the courage to tell him her feelings. This leads to some very hot sex scenes between these two.

Joe on the other hand is trying to reign his wolf in and not totally smother her with his alpha side. He is deadly and lethal and all the yummy things that come with a strong alpha male. Keith and Abby, from book one have lots of page time and I have to say I am still a Keith fan girl. He is so over the top Alpha that he makes me want to submit while I sit reading in my chair. Abby was a bit over the top in her protective mode of her sister, and I was ready by the end for Abby to make peace. Brynn handles her well though as only a sister can.

Sanctuary Lost is a great addition to the Red Rock series. Moira Rogers has created an action packed world where romance definitely doesn't take a back seat.
