Editorial Reviews

Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) is a beautiful and enigmatic scientist who seeks out all manner of monstrous creatures. Aided by forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), tech expert Henry Foss (Ryan Robbins), professional con artist Kate Freelander (Agam Darshi), and the mysterious and unpredictable John Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl), the Sanctuary team tracks down, studies and protects the strange and often terrifying creatures that secretly populate our world.

Sanctuary is a series that's a mix of scifi and monster movie with a dose of the X-files tossed in. In an universe that looks a lot like ours, but is populated with mermaids, lizard people and the occasional vampire, Amanda Tapping - of Stargate fame - plays Helen Magnus, a 160+ year old woman who's devoted her life to studying the world's 'oddities'. Sometimes protecting the monsters from the rest of the world, other times stopping said monsters from hurting others.

Magnus' team is comprised of Will Zimmerman, a psychologist and ex-FBI profiler, Kate Freelander, a bad girl gone good and Henry Foss, a werewolf who's also a technological genius.

Adding to the quirkiness of the show, Bigfoot is Helen's butler and she's, over the decades, rubbed elbows with an endless assortment of history's figures, including having once dated Jack the Ripper.

Season three is the first twenty episode season for the show and, to me, the show itself shows the stress. I found many episodes to be enjoyable, but others were decidedly not to my taste. I think it is very much a 'your mileage may vary' moment with some of them.
But even with the episodes I didn't like there were plenty that I did.

The set is a 6 disc set with the 6th disc being entirely made up of specials:
Visual effects Season 3
Amanda Tapping directs One Night
Hollow Earth
Damian Kindler: In the Director's Chair
The music of Sanctuary
Behind the Scenes, Normandy
Sanctuary for Kids
Character Profile, Nikola Tesla
Bloopers/Outtakes
Deleted Scenes

There are also audio commentaries on some of the episodes Kali III, Animus, Breach, Hollow Men, Metamorphosis, Normandy, and Out of the Blue.

I just received my DVD boxset of Sanctuary season 3 and I have to point out something before I even watch the first episode.

I know the show will be fabulous, it always is.

But the packaging is atrocious! It is a six disc set and the package literally has three slots for DVDs. The DVDs are stacked on one another. The first slot has discs 1 and 2 stacked together, the second has discs 3 and 4 stacked together, etc.

Plus, getting the discs out is very difficult. I'm fairly careful with my DVDs (and I realize that they are also very sturdy), but I was actually afraid of breaking one of the discs at one point while simply trying to get it out of the package.

I love the show but whoever thought this type of packaging was a good idea needs to rethink it (or let someone else design the package)!

Hence the rating...I had to knock off a star for the terrible packaging.

While I recognize that $53.99 is expensive, people need to remember that this season has 20 episodes, not 13. Also, Amazon has a history of having a low discount and increasing the discount as we get closer to the release date. Just keep an eye on the price. I can't wait for this! While there were a few not-good-at-all eps this season, there were some stellar ones also that I really want to hear the commentary on. The buzz about the behind the scenes sounds awesome too!

When the first copy of this 6-disc Bluray set arrived, I discovered there was a disc missing. However, after notifying Amazon, they quickly sent a replacement.
I am a Region B customer. This box set from E1 Entertainment has no information on the packaging as to Region coding. However, I have seen reviews indicating it is Region A locked. When playing a disc in my Region B player, the Region A only warning message appears. If you then press the "Top Menu" button on the remote, the disc loads and plays as normal.
I have now finished playing all 20 episodes on my Pioneer Region B only Blu-ray player. Picture and sound excellent.

Season 3 picks up with the Sanctuary being challenged both within & without: Helen tries to keep leadership of the Sanctuary, while appeasing the super-abnormal Kali. It has a number of standalone episodes that feature fan favourites like Nikola Tesla, the likeable rogue genius, and charming but corrupted John Druitt, an immortal Jack the Ripper. The Hollow Earth arc which spans five episodes from Breach to Pax Romana features a cool scifi take on "Journey to the Center of the Earth". Adam Worth, Helen's nemesis, comes across as a partly sympathetic character tied to the origin of the Five (which includes Sherlock Holmes).

What's Great: I really wanted to love this series. It's got Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1) as Helen Magnus. The plots have elements of Indiana Jones/Buffy Vampire Slayer/Steampunk, and a wonderful theme of tolerance and understanding, as the Sanctuary network seeks to learn about and protect what some call monsters or mutants. The Sanctuary team is more like a family, and with Tesla and Druitt, an extended one. The quirky, new-age humor keeps things fun, and the music is moving (prefer the 2nd season main theme over the 3rd, though).

What's Not: Sanctuary deals at times with slimy, icky, oozing creatures, and sometimes that ooze is a certain cheesiness in the cgi or writing. The show has a lot of tolerance and heart, but sometimes the execution feels clumsy: compared to Tapping's Stargate, for example, the storytelling is less smooth and coherent. Plots are sometimes resolved too quickly: Pax Romana should be a two parter, but is not, probably due to cost. Damian Kindler, the show's creator, has awesome ideas ("Normandy", "Awakening") that unfortunately, are not revisited.

Region coding
Hi, just checked this on my EU-player, and it does NOT play, so clearly this is region A encoded discs.
