Editorial Reviews

Review

"So to the hopeless romantics out there I say, Highly Recommended - have at it, this is a must-read. To the snarling cynics like me who mentally have their arms akimbo and their eyebrow raised, I say pick up Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love and surprise yourself by discovering the romantic in you." -- BookIdeas.com

"Sand Dollar, a fantasy romance by Sebastian Cole, lives up to its subtitle, A Story of Undying Love... bookreview.com considers Sand Dollar an excellent romance novel and looks forward to reading more from Sebastian Cole." -- BookReview.com

"Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love is Sebastian Cole's debut novel, but I think he will have a long list of best sellers if he keeps going at this rate. It will renew your faith in finding and keeping that one true love." -- Kate Patrick

"Sand Dollar is a strong pick for general fiction and romance collections, highly recommended." -- Midwest Book Review

"Sand Dollar is one of those rare books that makes you feel, laugh and cry all at the same time. This smashing debut by Sebastian Cole reads like the best of Nicholas Sparks with just enough schmaltz. Moving and emotive, it's every bit The Notebook done up for summer."
-- Jon Land, bestselling author of Pandora's Temple

From the Author

Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love is a story about a love gained, a love lost, and through it all, a love that just won't die. Although it's considered to be a romantic fantasy -- a kind of cross between The Notebook and The Sixth Sense -- the book distinguishes itself from other romance novels in its genre by its honest portrayal of life as a recurring tragedy, a roller coaster ride of sorts between joy and heartache, and the faith needed to overcome it. Sand Dollar is a thought-provoking, emotional read that, among other things, might even have you yelling at the main characters at times. And not only is it filled with plenty of twists and turns, but the surprise ending will knock your socks off!

More About the Author

Sebastian Cole never intended on being a writer. He graduated from Brown University in the 80s, then worked briefly in New York before returning to Rhode Island to work in his family's business. Nineteen years later, he took a leap of faith and left the company to pursue his dreams, which has led him to where he is now: a novelist of romantic fiction. Cole writes from the heart, believing in true love, love at first sight, and finding that one person in life you're meant to be with.

Cole's debut novel, SAND DOLLAR: A Story of Undying Love, was emotionally inspired by his own personal life experiences. SAND DOLLAR has won numerous awards, including being a winner of the Beverly Hills Book Award, a bronze winner of ForeWord Reviews Book Of The Year Award, a silver winner of the Feathered Quill Book Award, a finalist in the USA Best Book Awards, a finalist in the International Book Awards, a finalist in the National Indie Excellence Book Awards, and a finalist in ForeWord Firsts debut literary competition for first-time authors. Many have compared Cole to one of his favorite authors, Nicholas Sparks, whom Cole cites as an inspiration for becoming an author. Whether or not he ever achieves that kind of success, touching the lives of others through his writing has been the single most gratifying thing he has ever done.

REVIEWED BY HEATHER

SAND DOLLAR begins with one of the more mysterious prologues I think I've ever read. The main character, Noah, is getting married. Queue the bells, horse-drawn carriage, music, a nervous bride, and an ex-wife dashing in...wait, what? Yes, right at the start, a bedraggled woman interrupts a wedding (Noah's wedding!). Noah actually pauses the wedding (I'm sure that will go over real well with the bride waiting at the altar, right?), leaves the church, and pursues the mysterious woman into busy traffic. During the course of their conversation, it's revealed that they should have stayed married (oohhhh, so that wasn't his first time at the altar!); Noah still loves her but it's been 13 years since he's seen her, and she still loves him too. What next??

The book then swoops ahead in time to when Noah is 80 years old and in the hospital due to an unspecified incident. An orderly pops in to check on Noah, and Noah shares his love story with the orderly. Throughout the book, we learn about Robin (the flawed, wedding interrupter-er who captured Noah's heart), Noah's parents (who are deeply - and I mean *deeply* controlling and manipulative), his brother, and other minor characters.

I'm not going to hold you in suspense; the book wasn't my favorite. ☹ I really wanted to like it, but I spent 50-60% of the book just plain confused. The book constantly moves around in time and I constantly lost track of people. For example, if that prologue summary above sounded busy, it's because it was! And then the next chapter moves ahead in time (how much time is unclear) to when Noah is 80 and in the hospital, and on the fourth page, we go back in time to Noah and Robin's honeymoon. Wait a minute, wasn't Noah marrying someone else?

I must confess I approached Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love with trepidation - I am not a regular reader of romance novels. I prefer to entertain fantastic or speculative worlds rather than consider the possibility of true love discovered at a cathartic moment of gazing into a beloved's eyes, and so I approached Sebastian Cole's tale with eyes narrowed and hackles raised. After all my posturing and suspicion, I caved in record time and surrendered to the tale's earnest charms. In the final analysis, I am a jaded romantic, and Sebastian Cole's Sand Dollar: A Story of Undying Love shook out most of the cold jade and revived the romantic in me.

Noah Hartmann, born to a wealthy Rhode Island family, was having a good life without really living. His desire to find something better than the comforts of a privileged life made him take up the quest of finding his soulmate. Despite all his hard work and diligence, he actually found her - a whirlwind named Robin who tumbled into his world and breathed life into him. And just when he thought he was finally happy, he lost her. Broken and confused, he somehow managed to move on with his life only to have Robin appear again and again, making him realize each time that he loved her as truly and deeply as each time he lost her. It was a painful metamorphoses for the lovers: Robin awoke to the horrors and secrets of her past to free herself for Noah, and Noah was paying a high price to destroy the veneer of existence he was cocooned in for the chance of a life with Robin. And despite the many twists of this heart-wrenching story for the reader to enjoy, the author gifted me with one more delectable twist that sent my heart-strings strumming!

I really wanted to like this book, especially after reading that it was compared to Nicholas Spark's work which I really enjoy reading. Unfortunately I found this nothing like Spark's writing and found it laughable that anyone would put this book in the same class. There was virtually no character development in this book to speak of and very little plot. I struggled to feel anything about any of the characters other than contempt or frustration, and had trouble finding any reason to finish reading the book at all. There was very little description in the book and the dialogue was simply ridiculous. I would urge you not to waste your money on this book, because if you're expecting a read like The Notebook you will be sadly disappointed. I wish I could get a refund for this one!

Sebastian Cole has written an outstanding debut novel. For those of us who have loved, been disappointed and heartbroken along the way and perhaps let someone we love down will find so very much to relate to in this novel. The characters grip you from the very start. The love story of Robin and Noah is realistic in every single way as along with joy comes heartache. I think Mr. Cole has the capacity to write eloquently what we often feel but cannot adequately express. He has already proven that in this novel. Without giving away too much, the novel brought me to tears and after reading what the author wrote at the end of the novel it was as if someone looked into my soul and wrote emotions I have felt for so many years. This is one of those books I will read and reread through the years. I highly, highly recommend Sand Dollar, this a novel not to be missed.
