Very enjoyable,
This review is from: The Sand Dragon (Paperback)
An excellent horror novel with a new and interesting take on vampires. I gotta be honest, I'm a little tired of vampires. Even well written vampires. So I was very happy when Stewart's vampires were actually different and interesting, making the book vastly more enjoyable than if he'd settled for some vampire clones from Buffy or Charlaine Harris. There is a quality to Stewart's vampires that actually made them what they should be -- creepy. For that, nicely done Mr. Stewart.
In addition to vampires, Stewart gives us some monsters, a little science, some mythology, human tragedy, First Nation spirituality and some social commentary. Thanks to the setting Stewart chose, all those things blend nicely into the story and actually work to move the plot along. I never felt bogged down in details or sub plots that didn't matter. Stewart's writing is solid. The Sand Dragon is smoothly written and nicely paced.

A top pick and solid recommendation for fantasy readers,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sand Dragon (Paperback)
The dragon is a legend that has captivated the world for centuries. "The Sand Dragon" tells the story of paleontologist Kim Axon as she discovers a dinosaur skeleton that could be something far more. An ancient evil surrounds the area, and Kim is baffled to understand it, but must before it consumes the community around her. "The Sand Dragon" is a top pick and solid recommendation for fantasy readers.

A Great Horror Story!,
By
This review is from: The Sand Dragon (Kindle Edition)
This book took me a couple of chapters to really get into, but when I did, it became a very action packed, mystery type of horror book. In fact there were times when I wondered if I needed a seat belt because so much was happening. Not that it was a bad thing. In this case it's actually a great thing especially when looking for a good horror story.
A discovery of an intact pterosaur skeleton becomes the center of attention to paleontologist, Kim who is known to the locals and another "outsider" and cryptozoologist, Dr. Bythell. When the skeleton is stolen and Kim suspects Dr. Bythell, things in the story really start to heat up. We really start to learn more about the mystery surrounding this find and start to sense the horror of the book as we get to know Jamie, Alice, Sandy and especially Patrick, who are the other main characters. What unfolds as we go along with their adventures becomes very creepy and we are left wondering exactly what is going on. Why are people changing? Why are they dying? Is it a toxin? Is it a disease? Something more? We find these answers and more than what was expected as we keep reading. Even though this is primarily a horror book, there are some historical facts I was glad that was handled in a pretty frank manner. In this area described, the aboriginals are a part of the Cree nation and the past sins of the area also rear it's ugly head within the story. The anti-native schools and the way many were treated have an impact on the area and, deservedly so, present a big aspect to this story. One way in particular which became an interesting twist. Some Cree/Native folklore is also mixed into the story. I love it when books do this and it was done well. I give this book 4 stars and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good horror story. Hope I didn't leave too much out as I wouldn't want to spoil this story for anyone. It is a good read and I love how you figure things out as you go along in the book.

Creepy Thrill Ride...,
By Rachel "Parajunkee's View" (Jefferson, LA, United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Sand Dragon (Kindle Edition)
Slow to start but worth the wait, this creepy thrill ride had me glued. Stewart has a unique writing style that was like trying a new foreign dish. It took me a few bits, but once I acclimated myself to the taste...I was hooked. The author also showed a deep understanding of the subjects talked about, each character had their own personalities and thumb-prints. You might not like those characters, but each were well-formed and an three dimensional, instead of the usual supporting characters in novels, who are usually just their for placers.
REVIEW: Center stage is the discovery of what is believed to be a fossil in a very odd little trailer town that is centered around the tar sands and the company that mines them for oil. You get the feeling that fossils are found a lot in the region, given that they are tar sands and dinosaurs had a habit of falling into them and becoming, well fossils, so of course the managers want to speed up this fossil extraction. They go over local girl, Kim Axon's, paleontologist, head and bring in a creepy cryptozoologist, Dr. Sebastien Bythell. Quickly Kim begins to suspect that Dr. Bythell is up to no good, and is rather odd, when the fossil gets extracted over night. As more and more characters are introduced and come into play, you begin to realize that something is strange about this town and because it is a horror story - something serious creepy. When really screwy events begin happening, murders, a mysterious illness and more odd appearances by Dr. Bythell this town is plunged into utter chaos and mass hysteria is reached. Now enters the survivors and their desperate fight to save their lives. You don't want to miss their story. Like I said before, Stewart has a unique writing style and character depiction I very much enjoyed. His character creation was by far the best part of The Sand Dragon. Each character had their own flavor and world building that was exemplary. Their bleak lives were thrust at you with nothing hidden, open for you to relate to, sympathize, or hate. I almost believed that this was a non-fiction, the characters were so very poignant. Not only that, his story telling was gritty and in-your-face that will leave you shivering and begging for more, that is if you like a bit of adrenaline... RECOMMENDATIONS: This is an adult novel. I recommend this for horror fans, if you've read liked, Koontz, King, etc., you'll enjoy this one.

A fresh take on a classic "monster",
This review is from: The Sand Dragon (Kindle Edition)
This newest novel by Michael Stewart brings a fresh, new (to me, at any rate) angle to the popular dragons and vampires. An uncovered skeleton, presumed to be a dinosaur, sparks a series of traumatic events in a small town. Madness, disease, and terror run rampant as townsfolk are "infected" by an unknown malady. A small group of people remain to save the day, and perhaps the world.
I found the beginning of this book a little jumpy. I often felt like I was missing paragraphs here and there, if not whole pages. Scenes would spontaneously switch and I'd spend a few minutes backtracking, trying to figure it out. At first, I also found the mining lingo confusing - having no prior knowledge of it at all. But that was easily overcome as the story picked up. The characters were real and believable - a rarity in horror novels for me. Kim seems to be the main character throughout the book and I really started to feel attached to her. Jaime was another favorite. His trasformation - both literally and figuratively - was amazing to witness. His fiance, Alice, irked me in many ways but I rather think she was supposed to. The mythos and legends in this book were lots of fun. They reminded me of the brilliant blending of belief systems in Stewart's previous book 24 Bones. I've read a lot of vampire novels, and this one was definitely unique. The concept of their creation and purpose as well as their evolution was just amazing. The dragons, as well, were portrayed in a way I've never encountered before. If you're looking for a new take on some old favorites, I highly recommend this book. It's quick to read, action packed, and ever-so-slightly spooky. I think I'll be haunted by thoughts of the power generator at Kim's mother's house for many days to come. |
