Format: Hardcover
It had been years since I read an historical novel. I'd gotten away from them as I gravitated toward shorter, zippier fiction, i.e. detective and suspense stories, preferably by folks who are well on the way to mastering their craft, who, along with being gifted storytellers, can bring a scene alive with keenly observed detail and playful dialogue. I read fiction mostly in bed before going to sleep, and thus usually wait until the books are out in paperback. Easier to hold longer. So Sand Mansions had three strikes against it at the get-go: long story, big heavy hardbound book by a beginning author. I read it anyway, because my wife graduated from Gainesville High School, and I've visited the place several times with her. I like Gainesville. Loved the book. I won't reinvent the wheel here by repeating what others have said about the story and the writing. I will say, tho, that they're not exaggerating. The narrative was so compelling that I quickly found new ways to hold the heavy tome without getting cramps in my hands or wrists, and I read at least a chapter a night. Definitely a page turner. Wonderful characters. I hope Gilliland has more stories coming. Meanwhile I'd love to see Sand Mansions, the movie. The kind of cast that did Cold Mountain would be perfect.

I know many of you are wondering why anyone would live in Florida prior to the advent of air conditioning. You might even wonder why some of us choose to live in the central part of the state today. Gainesville in the words of the author is one of those places that "gets a hold on a person." I highly recommend reading Sand Mansions as the novel gives the reader an insight into the historical happenings that shaped north central Florida and gives you an excellent story as well. If you like romance, intrique, murder and mayhem, you'll find it here. If you are a member of a book club, please keep in mind that this book is not a quick read.
