Incredibly Encouraging Read, September 2, 2011
This review is from: Sand to Pearls: Making Bold Choices to Enrich Your Life (Paperback)
First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Heidi McLaughlin and her publisher for sending me a copy of "Sand to Pearls" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me. Heidi McLaughlin's "Sand to Pearls" is an inspiring read that will encourage boldness in your behavior as it pertains to your Christian walk and other endeavors. The title reflects the process by which an oyster turns an irritating grain of sand into a beautiful and priceless pearl, this book's chapters contrast 13 "irritants" - things that aren't necessarily bad, but aren't God's best - with their "beautiful and priceless" counterparts. This book contains no frills that beg its use in a women's study group, like obvious discussion questions. Yet each chapter poses food for thought on a variety of topics. The book encourages prayer and looking to the Word of God. Based upon that, I would recommend it to be used in a reading or study group. This is a lovely book that will point to God's Word to enrich the life of the reader.

Wonderful book!, August 2, 2011
This review is from: Sand to Pearls: Making Bold Choices to Enrich Your Life (Paperback)
Sand to Pearls is a great book about "making bold choices to enrich your life." It's about how our insecurities can hold us back from the wonderful future that God has planned for us. The book has 13 Chapters and each chapter covers a different topic that women often get stuck in. These topics are obligations, sabotaging ourselves, friendships, resentment, blended families, buyer's remorse, comparing ourselves to others, fears, regrets, shame, panic, and careers. The author shares personal stories and examples in each chapter and how to move past the area you're stuck in. She also quotes from other books, which give wonderful encouraging, inspiring words to help you move forward in your life. Every chapter has a section about how to make choices that enrich your life that are very practical and helpful. Also, every chapter ends with a section entitled, "Stop and Ask God To Help You Change Sand to Pearls." Each "s" is a scripture, "t" is thanksgiving, "o" is observation, and "p" is prayer. I really enjoyed this book and found a lot of practical ways to help turn my insecurities into a wonderful new life that I can live for God. One of my favorite things I learned was in Chapter 6 " Broken or Blended." Although, I've been married to my one and only husband for 16 years, I still found something great in this chapter. It talks about how your husband can't meet all of your emotional and spiritual needs, that God is the one to look to in order to meet all the empty places in our hearts. This really spoke to me - and I think reminding myself to turn to God will take a lot of pressure off my husband and make our marriage happier. Another thing I liked was in Chapter 12 "Panic or Prayer." It suggests to say a prayer to God, thinking of words that describe him using every letter of the alphabet. What a great challenge!

A gentle eye opener packed with dynamite suggestions, July 19, 2011
This review is from: Sand to Pearls: Making Bold Choices to Enrich Your Life (Paperback)
Reading Sand to Pearls: Making BOLD Choices to Enrich Your Life, I felt as though I was sipping tea with a friend who was gently reminding me, through personal stories and Scriptural references, that not only am I a child of God, but that He loves me unconditionally. Not only does He know my name, but He has particular plans for my life. In the course of 13 chapters, Heidi McLaughlin addresses situations and feelings endemic to all, describing "choices" we can make in our personal and work lives; for example, to move from being resentful to reasonable, competitive to content, or shamed to radiant. Placed near the end of each chapter of Sand to Pearls, I especially appreciated these exhaustive lists of "choices" that I can make that will "enrich my life" and help me live the life God has planned for me. Each chapter ends with a STOP challenge--Scripture, Thanksgiving, Observation, and Prayer--that drew me into quiet moments of reflection on the "choices" I've made that influence the life I'm leading. Can I make the "BOLD Choices" McLaughlin suggests in the subtitle to turn any sand in my life to pearls? I'm working on it. I found Sand to Pearls to be a substantive, meaningful, personal devotional tool, but can also see it as enlightening for discussion and sharing in small groups.
