Very relaxing and entertaining.

Frame around sand picture display too large, does not fit snug enough to keep glass from shifting and rattling in frame.

Not having the rubber plug there, however, IS a problem.

I had one of these as a kid, but it broke. Thought about it as an adult, added it to my amazon.com wish list and my wife bought it for me for my birthday. Initially, had a problem with the sand just dumping to the bottom too quickly to make a picture. Emailed the manufacturer, and they recommended adding some air with a syringe. (This was also recommended in the instructions in the box which I failed to read initially, but discovered later.) Thankfully, my cat is diabetic and I happened to have a stash of brand new syringes, but what a random tool to have on hand for most people. I'm overall satisfied at the five star level, but can only give 4 stars since the majority or buyers aren't going to have the right medical equipment at hand to fine tune the device.

This sand picture has much to be desired. The fluid in the frame allows the sand to fall to quickly. I have other sand pictures and I rate this one about 3 out of 10.

i really like this the scene it produce are though provoking. as time went on the scenes got better, the only thing that kills me is some sand got fouled or something and is an eye sore.

after about half a year the sand minerals have started to clump together and it kinda ruins the whole thing. sucks, i have no idea how to fix it.

Purchased this because it was larger and more expensive than most other options... My bad. The sand is so fine and the texture between the colors is so similar that it all just dumps in a blob. The fix requires a syringe, which is not something the average person has just sitting around the house. I bought a pair of other sand frames at 1/2 the price and although smaller, they are wonderful... I'll update the review if I can find the syringe, but for now, I am disappointed. Also, they charge $8.20 for shipping... That is also lame.

Sand picture base is too small and not heavy enough. Picture tends to tip over when you rotate the display. Frame around sand picture display too large, does not fit snug enough to keep glass from shifting and rattling in frame. If you do not have access to a medical syringe and needle you are unable to adjust the air in the sand picture.

I got this for my aging father-in-law who had suffered a stroke. It kept him somewhat entertained.

But, I had one years ago, and like that one, the air content needs adjusting. This one lets you do that by using a syringe. Luckily my wife is insulin dependent. I was able to adjust the air content and it works better.

However, some of the black sand grains are so large they get stuck in between the panes of glass. That's very annoying and there's nothing we can do about it.

That earns it 2 stars for "fun" because it's more frustrating than fun.
Educational? Not very, but when it's working okay, it's fascinating.

The mixture of sands isn't very well executed because the "landscapes" the product produces aren't very convincing.

I'd love to find one like the one I had when I was a lot younger... Oh well. The saying is correct, "They just don't make 'em like they used to."

On the box, and on the instruction card inside, there is NO information whatsoever as to who manufactured it, who to contact for problems, etc. As other reviewers have noted, it is necessary to adjust the air inside the picture. We received this at Christmas and have very much enjoyed it but now, about 4-5 months later, it has too much air in it, which does not allow the sand to flow as well. We have a veterinarian in the house so a hypodermic needle wasn't a problem. Not having the rubber plug there, however, IS a problem. We poked and poked inside the hole but all we did was bend the needle on the plastic of the frame, as there is no rubber plug. Not very happy with this. The one we had when I was a kid lasted years, this one only 4 months, pfft.

Like the other reviewers, the method of adding/removing air is a real pain, especially because they don't include any tool to do it with, but I can see their point of not having come with needles!

Still, for most people getting a syringe isn't easy to do, I'm a paramedic so I manage to get a few. It came with air, but not really enough, after a few months the sand picture doesn't flow like it did when I first got it... rather than individual grains falling, they all just fall in gooey clumps, which kinda makes it.... boring to look at.. It still creates aesthetically pleasing picture but.. it just looks.... clump and not right when it falls. Maybe the water's become contaminated, or the pressure is wrong inside of the window after adjusting it..

Here's a tip, don't try and mess with the air, just leave it alone and let it work. It now takes about 5 minutes to fully drop all the sand....so slow...
