Editorial Reviews

Sand & Snow, the sophomore album from Oxford band A Silent Film, is an exciting eleven song collection of expansive indie rock. The band s favorable comparisons to Coldplay, The Killers and Snow Patrol have caught the attention of countless fans and critics. They are that rare indie act whose undeniable songs propel them straight to radio station playlists.

I purchased A Silent Film's debut album based on my undying love for their single "You Will Leave a Mark." Although a few of the songs on that album lived up to the high standards set by the premiere single, the album as a whole was disappointing.

When I found out that Sand & Snow was out, I snatched it up in hopes that I'd get a least a few great tracks off it.

What we have here instead is an album that is brilliant from beginning to end. Unlike its predecessor, Sand & Snow is strong, well-written, and infallibly composed. The songwriting is top notch, and the overall sound is so much more unified and cohesive than the band's previous work.

In fact, Sand & Snow has managed to make it onto a very prestigious list of mine. It is the list of albums which have NO TRACKS that I don't like.

Even though I love every single track on this album, some still ascend as standouts. The opening song, "Reaching the Potential," really sets the tone for Sand & Snow. The recording perfectly conveys what's in store for the listener, from the deceptively mellow opening, to the contemplative, philosophical, clever lyrics, to the driving beats that kick the song's mood into the rafters.

"Rustle of the Stars" is the album's most mellow tune, but is a standout if for no other reason than Robert Stevenson's incredible vocal work. His control is enviable. The song also offers a great break in the album for the listener.

The final two tracks on the album, "Love Takes a Wrecking Ball" and "Thousand Mile Race," are incredible compositions and close the album with perfection.

A Silent Film proves that not every band suffers from the dreaded sophomore slump. If you're looking for a beautiful, upbeat album with great beats, thoughtful lyrics, and catchy melodies, Sand & Snow is the album for you. It's a hidden gem in the sea of forgettable artists and albums. Highly recommended.

I discovered this band by chance and have been continuously amazed. They are incredibly nice guys which only adds to what they are about. The new CD Sand & Snow set a new precedent with the incredible lyrics and vocals as well as the mastery of Spencer Walker on drums. Everyone will typically ask "who do they sound like?". I always tell people they have a sound of their own, but if I had to compare them, I would speak of them in the same breath as The Killers, Snow Patrol, or Coldplay. Their music transcends many others because of being virtually unknown yet astonish all those who give them a try or have the good fortune of seeing them live as I did in Dallas, TX. In short and simply, you will not be disappointed. Also, give The City That Sleeps a listen, well worth it.

The second album for this Oxford-based band was a long time coming, but highly anticipated. The final release was definitely worth the wait, & exceeds any expectations a listener might have after the band's first album, The City That Sleeps. The production is top-notch, mixing is a dream, and each song seems to hold the key to a story you've known your whole life. It is evident that each member of A Silent Film has mastered his skill, & the vocals of Robert Stevenson will threaten to bring tears to your eyes, & joy to your heart. Definitely a must-have!

I have been an A Silent Film fan for a little more than three years. Their music is so captivating, lyrically and melodically. The City that Sleeps was a stand out album on it's own and will always be one of my favorites. The anticipation for "Sand & Snow" was well worth the four year wait between album releases. For anyone not aware, the band had plenty of material to produce a second album but once they migrated into the United States to tour behind The City that Sleeps, everything changed for singer/lyricist Robert Stevenson. Any old material was scrapped and Robert began a new writing process reflective of his experiences in America. Seeing them tour over the last year and a half gave some insight to their new material and I was awestruck from the first note. It was completely breathtaking. Ever since I purchased "Sand & Snow" on June 5, 2012 it's been on constant rotation either on my iPhone or in my car stereo. From the first note in "Reaching the Potential" to the last in "Thousand Mile Race", the album takes you on a ride that you don't want to get off. Each track effortlessly flows into one another and sends you on a journey of wonderment. There are very few albums where I can honestly say that I do not skip a single track and this is definitely one of them. This album, in my honest opinion, is one of the most skillfully written pieces of art and should be shared/enjoyed by many! Sand & Snow is easily my favorite album of 2012 and you will be doing a huge disservice if you let this fall by the waste side.

Robert Stevenson, Spencer Walker, Ali Hussain and Karl Bareham make up a quartet of such gifted musicians and it shows within this album. I highly recommend everyone check this album out as well as see them on tour, if you haven't already!

The song Harbor Lights was my boyfriend and my song. We really both loved it. He passed away a few months ago so I bought the album so I could listen to that song whenever I felt like it. He always felt that buying an album was so much better then buying a single song electronically. Musicians put a lot of effort into their albums so that is comes together to form a masterpiece along with art covers, lyrics, and biographies. A silent film is sort of like snow patrol with an artistic feel to it. All their songs are great and the lyrics are just as good! I suggest buying the whole album.
