One Bad Apple Does Not Spoil The Bunch, April 2, 2009
This review is from: Sandella's Soldier (Perfect Paperback)
In Sandella's Soldier, Sabrina McAfee has written an interesting romance story with a little bit of suspense. Major Braylon Wexler was excited to return to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to see his grandparents and to begin his new job as Lead Criminal Investigator for the Marines. Braylon was even more excited when he saw that the caretaker for his disabled uncle, Royce, was Sandella Summer.
Sandella had been caring for Royce for several years. She loved working for the Wexler family, taking care of her brothers and dad, after her mom died, and baking pies. But, the Summer's family hates the military and they decided never to discuss their reasons. When Braylon met Summer, he was determined to get to know her. Yet, in order to do that, he had to show her that all men in the military are not the same. As he tried to gain her trust, he began to investigate a cold case. As he got close to solving it, things became dangerous for both him and Sandella.
McAfee did a good job of mixing romance and suspense in this story. The beginning of the story was slow but it built up to a wonderful climax and romantic ending.

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Learning To Live My Life, September 1, 2009
This review is from: Sandella's Soldier (Perfect Paperback)
Sandella Summers has lived a scripted life. The tragic death of her mother places her in the role as caretaker for her father and matriarch for her three brothers. She has made herself content baking her special treats, and living a simple, unchallenging life; just the way she likes it. But, Sandella's contentment is interrupted by the appearance of Braylon Wexler, a seductive, arrogant soldier; absolutely not her choice in a man. In fact, because of a secret Sandella holds in her heart, what she feels for Wexler is unguarded contempt.
Major B. Wexler, Criminal Investigator for the military, is stationed at
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina's Marine base. Wexler is ready for the peace and harmony his childhood home always afforded him. But, there are two main reasons peace is not what he finds! Sandella, who is working for Wexler's grandparents, stirs a craving in him that is almost troubling, and there is an old criminal investigation that was never solved. Wexler learns of the trauma that is smothering Sandella's life and he also becomes acutely aware of the turmoil she is bringing to his. Although the stormy divorce of Wexler's parents has turned him against marriage, he has resolved to win Sandella's heart and bring closure to her personal conflict.
SANDELLA'S SOLDIER is an interesting mix of romance and suspense, with a military backdrop that focuses on some of the honor and dishonor surrounding men who wear uniforms. There were moments, for me, when the author seemed tentative about the characters and the plot, which affected the pace. But as the story evolved the pace and my interest began to increase.
