From Publishers Weekly

If there's an heir to the comics writing tradition of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, it's Carey, who currently writes the spinoff series Lucifer and peppers his stories with Gaiman's brand of clever, learned theology. This tale is a sequel to Gaiman's Sandman book The Kindly Ones. (Both titles, in fact, refer to the Eumenides from Greek mythology.) Those who haven't read Gaiman's book will likely be baffled by a few significant plot twists in this one. Lyta Hall, a former superheroine (and half-Fury) whose life has been shattered by the loss of her infant son, gets involved with an American theater group in Athens at the same time as the Greek gods decide to use her as a pawn in their internecine war. She ends up traveling through Hades, questioning the sort of vengeance her ancestors prized, and ultimately learning the fate of her bloodline. John Bolton, known for his painted comics, provides the art. This time, though, he seems to have represented most of the characters by heavily manipulated photographs, treated to appear in a "painterly" style that blends in with his purely fantastic images. Carey has a lot of irreverent fun with his mythological sources-in an early scene, Proteus murders kindly old Baucis and Philemon, who were turned into trees for their piety-and if the result doesn't quite have the scope of Attic tragedy, it does satisfyingly wrap up some of Gaiman's unresolved plot lines.

From Booklist

This spin-off from Neil Gaiman's phenomenally durable Sandman series begins with its heroine in custody for assaulting a man she picked up in a bar. No prostitute, she just wanted to feel something in the wake of her infant son's kidnapping and death, but the man inadvertently triggered her rage. Meanwhile, another man, walking the countryside, stops to talk to two trees--the ones Baucis and Philemon became (see Ovid's Metamorphoses). He is Cronus, last of the Titans, builder of Olympus, and long seeker of vengeance on the Olympians, of whom only Hermes remains. Meanwhile again, an acting troupe prepares for a performance in Greece. Of course, all these characters meet, with the Furies dogging some of them for varied sins of patricide. Out of the encounter Hippolyta, whom we first met in handcuffs, and an actress whose father recently died emerge to renewed life. Bolton's excitingly lurid artwork, based in painting over photographs, compensates for Carey's lurching scenario and an undercurrent of New Age be-your-own-goddess sentimentality. Ray Olson

More About the Author

Mike Carey got into writing through comic books, where his horror/fantasy series Lucifer garnered numerous international awards and was nominated for five Eisners. From there he moved into novels and screenplays, while still maintaining a presence in the comics world (he is currently writing two of Marvel's flagship titles, X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four). His movie Frost Flowers, an erotic ghost story, is currently in production with Hadaly/Bluestar Pictures. He lives in London, England, about as far as you can get from the centre of the city and still have access to the London Underground train network. His wife, Linda, writes fantasy for young readers under the pseudonym A.J. Lake. They have three children and an implausibly beautiful cat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Sandman Spin-off Since Death: The High Cost of Living, November 28, 2002

If you're even looking at this item then you probably have already read Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. If not then you should get those graphic novels first before you even think of getting any of The Sandman Presents series. But if you have read The Sandman up to its conclusion and were wondering what ever happened to Lyta Hall after The Wake, then this book is for you.

The photorealistic art by John Bolton is the best of all The Sandman Presents series, and Mike Carey already proven his ability to write Gaiman's characters with the other Sandman spin-off Lucifer and with the fan-favorite Hellblazer.

Plus, this is one of only three appearances Daniel has made out of the original Sandman. The other two being in JLA: Strength in Numbers and Lucifer: Nirvana. So if you want the complete Sandman library then this book is a must.

Plus, it looks really good next to The Sandman: The Dream Hunters hardcover.

Basically, a must for any Neil Gaiman, Mike Carey, or Sandman fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars huh?, April 19, 2003
Maybe it's because I haven't read the Sandman graphic novels in a couple of years... maybe it's because I need to bone up on my Greek mythology.... oh, heck, maybe it's just because I'm a simpleton -- whatever the reason, I just couldn't wrap my head around this book. I desparately wanted to like it. But try as I might, I had a very difficult time following the story (never a good sign), even after two readings.

In true John Bolton form, the artwork is more gorgeous than gorgeous. Unfortunately, while aesthetically pleasing, the choice of models is somewhat distracting. Call me kooky, but I have a really hard time suspending disbelief enough to accept the notion that millenia-old Greek dieties come in the shape of teenagers.

This was my first exposure to Mike Carey's work. I've heard lots of wonderful things about him, so I won't be put off simply because THE FURIES didn't work for me. If you're looking to try some Carey, maybe the LUCIFER trade paperbacks would be a better place to start.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous but Unsatisfying, June 28, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The photorealistic artwork in this book is really stunning (though I prefer the more comic-booky art style of Jill Thompson in "Sandman: Brief Lives").

The plot, though, was just ... blah. I didn't feel like Lyta Hall's story was really even resolved. The business with Cronus was never really explained (I guess I can pull out my old copy of "Bullfinch's Mythology" and look him up). Overall, it wasn't very satisfying.

Another reviewer called this the best Sandman spinoff since "Death: The Time of Your Life." I don't agree. I think the best Sandman spinoff (other than the two Death books, which were awesome) was Lucifer.

I don't know why this one was realeased in hardcover, other than so DC could charge more for it. I'd suggest waiting for paperback, or borrowing someone else's copy. The story's not worth the price tag.
