5.0 out of 5 stars A truly impressive compendium of period photography
Accompanied by in-depth captions, Mari Sandoz's Native Nebraska: The Plains Indian Country is a truly impressive compendium of period photography showcasing her life and work. Born on the Nebraska Panhandle in 1896, Mari Sandoz grew to become an outstanding American writer until her death in 1966. Her writing was profoundly influenced by the people who called at her...

2.0 out of 5 stars Emphasis on locations Sandoz lived and her relatives, not on Indians
The book with its annotated photos focuses on Sandoz's Nebraska experiences rather than her time in NYC. 5.0 out of 5 stars A truly impressive compendium of period photography, July 5, 2001
This review is from: Mari Sandoz's Native Nebraska (NE) (Images of America) (Paperback)
Her writing was profoundly influenced by the people who called at her homestead. Her acquaintances included Bad Arm, a Sioux Indian who fought at the little bighorn and was present at Wounded Knee; "Old Cheyenne Woman", a survivor of both the Oklahoma and Fort Robinson conflicts; and the legendary William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Mari Sandoz's Native Nebraska will prove of profound interest to students of Native American studies, women's studies, and American history.

This review is from: Mari Sandoz's Native Nebraska (NE) (Images of America) (Paperback)
The book with its annotated photos focuses on Sandoz's Nebraska experiences rather than her time in NYC. Lincolnites will enjoy the photos--both new and historical--of sights in Lincoln that Sandoz frequented, including the Nebraska Historical Society, the Capitol and the University of Nebraska. While in Lincoln, Sandoz pursued writing but Clark shows that she could also become very discouraged. One UNL professor, Mamie Meredith, witnessed Sandoz burning almost 100 of her stories that she could not get published.
From Nebraska Life: Clark is a Texan, but she knows Sandoz, though had never met her. She has written several articles on the author. For Native Nebraska she collected more than 200 black and white photographs [most of them of her own making] of the Sandoz family and places important to them.
