Dust off and drift away,

This review is from: The Sandpipers (Vinyl)
This album, long ago thrown in the bin of obscurity, may resonate with modern day Jack Johnson fans, or, perhaps, someone who appreciates the stylings of 60's Brit groups, such as Chad and Jeremy. It is not likely to appear on any of one's friends' iPod playlists, but that may be a contribution to its unique charm.
The Sandpipers, with this recording, could tame the most ferocious beast. Make no mistake, it's not easy listening, although it may be categorized in that league. It defies categorization, it stands as a class by itself. My dearly beloved grandfather, a self confessed musical snob, was duly impressed with these lads in the mid-60's, so much so he was still wearing out the needle on the record player twenty years later, when I was a little girl. It was relaxing, innocent, and, most importantly, melodic and meaningful. This offering was quite different to contemporary music in the 60's, and certainly modern music from that period forward. However, gleaming elements are evident in some current work, most notably artists like Johnson, particulalry on " In Between Dreams". It would not shock me in the slightest to learn he has listened to, and appreciated, The Sandpiper's work. " Softly as I Leave You" will reduce one to tears, while " Try to Remember" allows the listener to float away on a dreamy cloud, recalling individual sweet encounters. "Inchworm" is silly, yet oddly profound.... slow down, breath in, breath out.... take your time. " Glass" has an intensity that strums, yet makes a dramatic impression.... All of these songs conjure dreams and visions, but also seep into the psyche, leaving little choice but to delve into one's conscience. It's music that is sweet and thoughtful.... not a bad selection to dust off!
