Ignore the "home dec" vernacular and even the authors' breezy way of assuming that, hey, anyone with any IQ at all can master a sewing machine. Because here, in Betzina and Valentine's fourth book, is a literal font of crafty creativity. Where else could you find instructions for a kitty litter box cover? Or a TV remote-control pillow holder? Sure, some of the more than 50 patterns are a bit silly. Yet what draws and holds readers' attention are excellent directions, work sheets for measuring such size-variable items as window coverings and futons, good process photographs, and a bevy of useful information--about single and double welts, gathering, stretch velour, and other related topics. Sandra Betzina, the "power" behind Power Sewing, is the author of More Fabric Savvy, Fast Fit, Power Sewing Step-by-Step, Sandra Sews for the Home, No Time To Sew and Fear of Sewing and most recently, the Power Sewing Toolbox series. She has produced a skill series of Power Sewing DVDs and also designs a full line of patterns for Vogue under the tab of Today's Fit. Sandra hosted her own show, Sew Perfect, on HGTV for six years and now has a regular, online sewing show called Power Sewing TV, which is co-hosted by Canadian sewing expert, Ron Collins. Sandra is also a popular speaker and hosts several week-long Sewing Retreats San Francisco throughout the year.

I received this book as a gift and am buying it for a friend. I found the instructions down to earth and based around how to create patterns for furniture, windows, pillows etc in a non-intimidating way.

Some creative ideas that I haven't seen before (like a house for kids designed to fit over a card table.

Sandra Betzina is wonderfully talented when it comes to garment contstruction. I have several of her books and love them. However, her expertise and creativity do not seem to extend to home sewing. The projects in this book are not inspiring. The fabric choices are questionable. It is difficult to glean the 'tricks of the trade' as this book is organized entirely by project, not technique. Save your money. If you are truly interested, check it out from the library before you invest in this publication.

As with any "project" book, the projects featured in this book are pretty specific to certain styles or needs. However, unlike a lot of project books, it is easy to take the basic concepts and techniques and apply them to your own unique requirements. I am combining techniques from several different projects in the book to make a large window seat and coordinating valance for my kids' room. The instructions and photos have been very helpful to me, a novice sewer.
