Book Description

Cheap Eats and Sleeps February 1, 2002
Sandra Gustafson's beloved travel guides (more than 350,000 copies sold in the series) are poised to find their widest popular audience with the exciting re-launch of these best-selling series titles. Joining Great Eats and Great Sleeps Paris, Sandra's guides to London and Italy have been completely revised and updated, retooled and retitled, with new maps, streamlined layout, expanded listings, and more detailed neighborhood coverage. While Sandra's eagle eye for finding the best value for the money remains the series hallmark, its renewed emphasis on the full range of travel pleasures--from the inexpensive romantic hideaway to the splurge dinner worth every penny--is sure to please longtime fans and attract a legion more. Packed with personal recommendations, each revisited or newly discovered by Sandra, the Great Eats/Sleeps series is the perfect companion for anyone in search of the out-of-the-way, unusual, fun, and true flavor of Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, personalized recommendations, February 10, 2004
This review is from: Sandra Gustafson's Great Sleeps Italy (Paperback)
Although Ms. Gustafson's series of books is now "Great" instead of "Cheap", they still contain valuable, personal reviews of relatively inexpensive hotels. The idea is not the cheapest spots (see the Let's Go series for those), but less costly hotels which give above-average value for the money. I've stayed at her recommended hotels in both Florence and Rome and found them exactly as described. You won't be disappointed unless you expect 4-star amenities in a 2-star hotel.

4.0 out of 5 stars No reservation...No stress, June 30, 2009

My husband and I arrived in both Florence and Venice without hotel reservations. When we arrived in the cities we used the book to select our hotel and called them. In Florence, our first pick was vacant. In Venice, the 3rd was vacant. The book described them accurately. The 2 that we stayed at were both wonderful and inexpensive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid information, a little dated., July 25, 2004
This review is from: Sandra Gustafson's Great Sleeps Italy (Paperback)
I picked this book up along with Rick Steves'. I've found Great Sleeps Italy to have many more choices, several being much less known and therefore a better bargain, and easier to get into. That being said, the book is from 2002, and a little dated. I've noticed several big price increases from what she shows and even a few hotels that appear to no longer be in existence. For $11 on this site though, it is worth it.
