Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-This title opens on October 5, 1981, as O'Connor took her seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. Williams then backtracks to describe her subject's childhood, family history, and educational choices. She details O'Connor's difficulty in starting a career after law school, her marriage and her family, her tenure in the Arizona senate, and service on the Maricopa County Superior Court and the Arizona Court of Appeals. The author outlines the procedures for being confirmed for a Supreme Court appointment and mentions some of the decisions that have been handed down and the opinions that O'Connor has written during her years on the Court. This book is well organized with short, concise chapters. The black-and-white photographs enhance the book. Information on how to become a lawyer or a judge is appended.-Gayle Modrall, Presbyterian School, Houston, TX

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely written and informative., January 28, 2012
This review is from: Sandra Day O'Connor (Ferguson Career Biographies) (Library Binding)
I checked this book out of the library and really very much enjoyed it. In law school, my classmates and I found Sandra Day O'Connor's opinions to be some of our favorites as her writing style was logical and comprehensible, not circuitous like some of the others. While in law school we were told how she graduated at the top of her class from Stanford which was about all I knew about Sandra Day O'Connor until now. This book opens with her early childhood being divided between her parents' lazy B ranch and living with her Grandparents where she could have access to a better education. We learn how she married a classmate from Stanford Law and had three children. So she is a good role model for young girls in that she balanced having a family with a career. Furthermore, we are informed about her early entry into politics and then her return back to law as a judge. All in all, it is a very pleasant read and an informative one. The only drawback is that it does appear to have been written before O'Connor retired from the bench. So an extra chapter should probably be added regarding that. But it is still very interesting to read about the life of the First Female Supreme Court Justice. A very good read for young girls and curious adults alike.
