Good stuff,
This review is from: Sands of Death (Paperback)
I'm an eclectic reader with fairly diverse interests but I knew so very little about France in the Sahara apart from French Foreign Legion movies. This is a fascinating story of the disastrous 1880's Flatters Mission to establish a route for a trans-Saharan railroad. Some weird flowery writing here and there in some of the descriptions but the overall narrative is riveting and one with which I was completely unfamiliar. I had to pay close attention to all the Arabic names to keep it all sorted but it was well worth it: great adventure, great history, great tragedy to all concerned.
