5.0 out of 5 stars A John Wayne double feature, can't beat that
This is really great, a double feature of John Wayne's World War II classics. Both of these movies are favorites of mine and have a common theme. John Wayne is the the leader trying to develop the men of his command. Flying Tigers is the hotshot fighter pilot movie. Can John Wayne tame a hotshot pilot who is out for his own glory? This is really great, a double feature of John Wayne's World War II classics. Both of these movies are favorites of mine and have a common theme. John Wayne is the the leader trying to develop the men of his command. Flying Tigers is the hotshot fighter pilot movie. Can John Wayne tame a hotshot pilot who is out for his own glory? John Carroll is great as the flamboyant hot shot who learns his lesson the hard way, at the cost of another's life. Sands of Iwo Jima is a classic that way an Oscar nomination for Wayne. Can he reach the son of an officer and friend? Can he find a way to make John Agar grow up? This features used actual footage to add to the realism. This is a bargain, get it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars John Wayne 2-DVD Pack Sands/Flying Tigers, July 7, 2008

This review is from: Sands Of Iwo Jima / Flying Tigers (DVD)
Easily two of Wayne's finest films. If you like John Wayne, you should buy this 2-DVD set. The film quality is great, very clear. There are 2 separate DVDs in one case. Both films are very entertaining on a few levels. The storyline/plot is interesting and causes the viewer to want to find out how it concludes, the characters are multi-facetted and believeable, and the action scenes in both films are very well done. I heard that they used actual WWII combat footage for some parts of the Sands of Iwo Jima, but I can't confirm if this is correct. Often you'll see companies putting one great film packaged with a not so great film, but in this case, both movies in the set are winners. You can't go wrong with this 2-DVD set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saddle up ! Lets Get Back To The War !, June 17, 2008
This review is from: Sands Of Iwo Jima / Flying Tigers (DVD)
John Wayne's best of the best war movies, Sands Of Iwo Jima, Flying Tigers, showcase the Duke at his take charge military best. Sands Of Iwo Jima, a prime example of fighting men in action, featuring real World War II footage, and as you're watching this film you think about joining the Marines, when they're raising the American Flag on top of Mt. Suribachi. John Wayne was nominated for an Oscar for the role of Sgt. Stryker, the tough no-nonsense Sgt...Flying Tigers, another piece of war history- U.S.A. aiding China against Japan, in which World War II started shortly afterwards, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The basic scenario-The Duke is Gordon in command of this independent flying unit of expert gung-ho pilots playing it for keeps, always keeping tabs on their daily Zero kills. This Republic Pictures dvd is remastered, black and white like the original films at a reasonable price, can't beat two John Wayne classic war films on one.

5.0 out of 5 stars He gave his last full measure, August 12, 2010
This review is from: Sands Of Iwo Jima / Flying Tigers (DVD)
As a retired Army Major and adjunct history prof. I love war movies. I find few war movies that are really good at depicting the challenges leaders face in making decisions in combat. "Sands of Iwo Jima" is one of the best at depicting good leadership traits and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I always liked John Wayne in war movies more than in westerns. In "The Sands of Iwo Jima the "Duke" plays the hard as nails uncompromising Sgt. Stryker. He is tasked with training a Marine rifle squad before they invade Iwo. Needless to say he is unpopular with the men, but in the end he makes a fighting unit out of them and earns their respect. One of the few movies that the "Duke" dies in. Makes one just want to cry.

A classic war movie that should be viewed by all who like the genre.

One of the finest films made! This definately beats anything that has been put out today. It gives the definate air of being there as our men hit The sulfur island of Iwo jima. John Wayne was spectacular. This is still a must see. If you have seen "Flags of Our Fathers" and liked it, then you will love Sands of Iwo Jima.
I got this item in a timely manner as always with Amazon and would always trust them to send the item that was discribed. five stars on the quality of movie, five stars on the delivery and five stars all they way around!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic War Films Are Still Exciting, August 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sands Of Iwo Jima / Flying Tigers (DVD)
In Sands of Iwo Jima John Wayne plays Sgt. Stryker, a tough, mean instructor who takes a collection of recruits and is ordered to make them combat ready. Among the trainees is John Agar who plays the son of Wayne's former dead commander. Wayne's idea of the commander was that he was the greatest Marine to ever exist and the son a sorry excuse for a Marine. In between their days of training the movie focuses on the soldiers as they drink, fall in love, and fight. They take part in the battles of Tarawa which has excellent scenes of combat with some being real and includes the only piece of actual combat film of Japanese soldiers in combat against Marines. Finally Agar and Wayne come to an understanding and Agar finds he is more like his father than he thought.
Flying Tigers is strictly make believe, but based on the famous Flying Tiger squadron of American mercenary pilots fighting for China before the U.S. entry into the war. Wayne plays the commander of this collection of patriots, get rich quick, egomanaics, and flers for the honor of flying pilots. At the same time he is having a relationship with a nurse. The film was made during the war and was strictly for propoganda, but has excellent combat footage and a fair story line.
