Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A veteran CIA officer stumbles upon a conspiracy and is executed for her nosiness. A friend of the murder victim, Nora Mossa, another CIA agent, quickly finds her life in danger. She flees, deciding the only person who can help her is Alex Koves, an ex-agent and Nora’s former lover; unfortunately, he wants nothing to do with her. But Alex can’t resist the excitement he feels when on an active assignment. Not knowing whom to trust, they are forced to work off the grid if they are to find retribution for the death of their friend. The conspiracy involves high-up members of the government helping Iran develop nuclear capability, and they are willing to kill anyone who stands in their way. The character development here is first-rate, and the story line is intense. What could easily have been just another conspiracy thriller feels fresh and new in the capable hands of first-novelist Lee. The ending leaves some of the story unresolved, suggesting that a series is in the making. That would be a very good thing. --Jeff Ayers

Review

“Lee gets his book going a hundred miles an hour with his hair on fire and barely ever slows down.”
—Elmore Leonard, New York Times bestselling author of Raylan

“Death, mayhem, murder, Mossad, nukes, maniac billionaires set on world domination, double- and (of course) triple-crosses, Sandstorm has all the muscle-power of its title.”
—Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Fate

Sandstorm is excitement detonated! Taut and terrifying, Alan Lee’s debut thriller drops us into the kill zone of possibilities lurking behind real headlines.”
—Vince Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of Kill Shot

“The character development here is first-rate, and the story line is intense. What could easily have been just another conspiracy thriller feels fresh and new in the capable hands of first-novelist Lee.”

Alan L. Lee's Sandstorm, is a fantastic debut novel. What more could you want in an action suspense book then CIA agents, an Israeli spy, a Mossad agent a United States Senator and a billionaire who all appear to be immersed in an Iranian nuclear operation.
The series introduces readers to Alex Koves a former CIA agent and an ex-pro football player. His ex girlfriend and current CIA agent Nora Mossa, hunts Alex down to the St. Thomas islands where he's enjoying a much needed vacation, begging him to save her life. Agreeing to save Nora from a group of industrialists who believe Nora is onto their devious plot; Alex embarks on a wild mission to save her. They will need to overcome their present and past if there is to be a future together. Add in a Israeli spymaster who controls the Mossad's most lethal assassin and the adventure begins to take hold. Set in the backdrop of Sandstorm takes place against the real life United States and Israel dealings to keep Iran from building up its nuclear abilities.
Sandstorm grabs the reader from the first page to the last for one wild thrilling ride. This book is filled plenty of twists and turns that keep will keep its readers engaged until the last page, and have them wanting to come back for more. Its pages are filled with believable characters and plot lines that make it shine in a sea of action thrillers.
Action thrillers are not my typical genre but as Alan L Lee is a local author I was simply drawn to wanting to check this title out. I found it to be a well written book that kept me engaged in the story right through the last page and wanting to read more. I cannot wait for the follow up to Sandstorm!

When I was a teenager I dreamed of writing and this is the book I would have written at 16 - in other words it's a young man's fantasy. The hero is Mr. All American - ruggedly handsome, extremely virulent, a master fighter, and over the top intelligence Same for the heroine. In other words the premise is unbelievable. My understanding of spies is that they need to attract as little attention as possible and yet in this novel it is just the opposite. In one passage the author even wrote (I am paraphrasing), when she entered the room every eye was on her, she was so stunning. The other problem, a much used, I should say overused plot. The cabal of filthy rich men who are plotting to rule the world. Aren't we tired of this one yet. Would not recommend - where are Robert Ludlum and Frederick Forsythe when we need them?

Had to try this book since from one if Detroit's own, and it was one of the best decisions I have made in a long time. He describes the characters so well, you either immediately love or hate them. The plot takes many unexpected twists and really makes you wonder what is going on in the world we do not know about. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense thrillers, or like me, willing to try.

If you are a fan of Vince Flynn's books, you will love Sandstorm. It is an exciting, thrilling novel about an ex-CIA operative and a dirty politician (What a surprise!) But this is only one twist. Given our current "situation" with Iran and its nuclear program, this is a very time sensitive book. Vince Flynn's, Mitch Rapp, is my hero. Alan Lee's, Alex Koves, is now my 2nd hero. And Nora Mossa, another CIA operative, is one tough lady! The last page of Sandstorm is only the end of this book; it definitely is not the end of the story. Alex has more work to do and I can't wait for the sequel. A terrific debut novel.

The plot's a bit outlandish but in a fun way, like Vince Flynn, and the characters are winning. I'd definitely try another Lee book when I'm in the mood for something light.

I have read Vince Flynn, Brad Thor and recent authors to this genre Ben Coes, Brad Taylor and Scott McEwen as well as others and I must say Mr. Lee is now on my must read list of thrillers. If you like thrillers with good written action and two heroes with a past that makes for an interesting working relationship, then this is a book for you. Thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was one of the best of 2013 thrillers published. Hope Mr. Lee puts out more on Koves and Mossa soon, don't make me wait yearly.............
