Editorial Reviews

When composing for choir, Sven-David Sandström (1942 ) does not hold back in terms of expression or technical demands. This contributes toward a powerfully emotional tonal language, to which the Nordic sound of the Swedish Radio Choir is perfectly suited. Composer and choir have worked together for years and their close relationship is evident in the excellent performances heard here. Channel s usual superb multi-channel recording provides the perfect ambience to allow the music to speak.

I love contemporary choral music, particularly that of the American and Baltic composers. I have a substantial library of it, and listen to it all of the time; and though it pains me to say it, this CD ranks as the most worthless collection I have ever heard; and I am an easy reviewer. All of the entries were composed by Swedish composer, Sven-David Sandstrom, whose music seems to be developing in the opposite direction from the rest of modern choral music. While most modern choral composers have, since the 1990's, been developing a most agreeable, beautiful, and highly expressive style to their works (see Vasks, Esenvalds, Sylvestrov, Miskinis, Praulins, Whitacre, Gjeilo, Lauridsen, Clausen, Mealor, Hannson), Sandstrom's work seems to be growing "uglier" and less accessible. While his older works seem to be filled with static harmonizations (similar to those heard during the movie 2001 - A Space Odyssey), his new music is riddled with barking angularities (soft, loud, quick, or slow) and no discernible melody, beauty, or musical value to be found. Tracks 1 and 2 both sound like the cranking of an old car that won't start (track 1 with a good battery, track 2 with a bad one), namely a mid-1960's Dodge Dart. The car-cranking sound also shows up later in the CD, in other recent pieces. The highlight of the older pieces (1980's - the best among a fairly miserable lot) feature static harmonizations, sometimes a bit interesting and mysterious, which then veer off into something ugly, pointless, and lacking in expression - at least to me. There is nothing on this CD that I ever want to hear again (I've listened to 3 times, hoping to find something redemptive about it).

The choir sounds skilled and professional, though the music makes it difficult to render a fair judgment.
