Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Told through a clever mix of narrative, letters, e-mails and instant messages, this multigenerational tale covers all-too-familiar ground as it charts the trials of three women living under the same roof: middle-aged marriage counselor Cecelia Dupree, a depressed recent divorcée with a penchant for sweets; her newly widowed mother, Belle; and her 17-year-old daughter, Erin, who's suffocating under CiCi's too-strict rules. Having been burned by her cheating ex, who fancies women in their 20s, CiCi can't seem to move on. Predictably, it's her vivacious mother, as well as the good-humored (and horny) seniors in Belle's reading group, who teach CiCi to embrace life—and the handsome younger man who's interested in pursuing a relationship with her. The book isn't as sweetly playful as the cover, featuring a scrumptious-looking ice cream cone, suggests, and the plot sometimes reads as if plucked from fantasyland (e.g., all three women pair off with fantastic men who love them just the way they are). But what saves this story from being a 300-page cliché is its moments of insight and poignancy. Whether writing from the perspective of an angst-ridden teenager or a bitter, depressed divorcée, Archer (Shocking Behavior, etc.) captures the voices and vulnerabilities of her characters with precision.

More About the Author

At the age of ten, Jennifer Archer made up her mind to become a writer. Then she grew up, became "sensible" and earned a business degree with a minor in accounting instead. After years of trying to find her way through a confusing maze of debits and credits she realized that, for her, accounting was no more sensible than becoming a World Federation wrestler. So in 1993, she enrolled in a creative writing class, and five years later, sold her first novel. Since then, Jennifer has written many novels and novellas, as well as numerous non-fiction works.

She has twice been a finalist for Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart award, and in 2006 was a finalist for the prestigious Rita Award and a nominee for a Romantic Times Bookclub Magazine Reviewer's Choice Award. Her debut novel for teens, Through Her Eyes, will be published by Harper Teen in April, 2011.

Jennifer has taught creative writing and has presented numerous talks and workshops for educators, students, writers' organizations and bookstores. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, travel and hanging out with family, friends and her dogs, Marge and Harry. She lives in Texas.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Family of Women, September 22, 2005
By
I loved this book. The dialogue is so believable, right on target. Each woman was someone I wanted to meet, and each, through her own narrative, made me laugh, cry, and sympathize. Plus it was a real hoot when the author poked fun at "bodice ripper" historical romances with "Penelope's Passion", the book she read to her mother's senior reading group. It's also nice to see older adults portrayed as sexually active, when too often they are stereotyped as doddering and passionless. No matter where you are in your life story, pick this one up. I would also recommend Taking Back Mary Ellen Black, also part of the NeXt series. Take warning, though, that that one has very explicit sex (in case you don't like that kind of thing).

Unique and very funny! Nice to see some writers willing to take chances and this one is a hit. The use of email and letters to move the story lines along is unusual and very effective. The stories of the three women, mother, daughter and grandaughter are funny and poingnent; illustrating the struggles of growing up, getting smart, and accepting age gracefully with spunk and humor! Can't wait to read her next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast, funny read...with surprises, July 6, 2005
I picked up this book, took it poolside, and literally did not put it down. Jennifer Archer's multi-generational tale of three strong women on the verge of big changes is laugh-out-loud funny. What surprised me were the poignant moments, the little tugs through rich characters with all their realistic flaws and foibles. Belle's letters to her deceased husband Harry made me cry more than once. (Which makes for a mess when you're slathered in sunscreen.) The ending was wholly satisfying, and I felt like each of the story lines were compelling and complimentary to the others.

I'll be looking for Ms. Archer's next book...
