Excellent For Improving Weak Signals,

This review is from: Sangean ANT-60 Short Wave Antenna (Electronics)
This antenna is great for improving weak shortwave signals. It can make a faint signal listenable. As an example, listening to VOA on 17895 kHz from Botswana, with only my Grundig radio's whip antenna, I could not make much out. But with the ANT-60 the signal improved remarkably and I could copy enough to write a reception report, and received a QSL card from VOA verifying I'd heard their Botswana transmitter. It will *not* do much to improve a fairly good signal, but definitely improves weaker ones. I recommend this antenna to anyone who wants to enhance their listening on portable shortwave radios.

Sangean ANT-60 Portable Short Wave,

Handy reel type wire antenna for portable shortwave radios increases sensitivity and improves reception. The wire is slightly on the thin side but it's sturdy and well made. An clip adaptor is included for radios without a 1/8" mini-jack that allows you to connect the reel antenna directly to the radio's external antenna.

I tried my Sangean ANT-60 Portable Short Wave Antenna with my Sangean 505, I did not notice any significant improvement with reception, but then again at the time I am living in a rather large city (Mexico City, the biggest in the World).I took my little radio and antenna on a recent vacation to the US Virgin Islands and attempted to pick up some radio stations from the French Caribbean with the built in whip antenna. I had some luck, but when I connected the ANT-60 I had some improved reception, I was very happy with the result. I recommend this antenna for non-crowded radio environment.

Good antenna for the price,

This antenna is great for anyone that has a portable shorwave radio, and would like to increase the sensitiviy and reception. I got these for my portable Radio Shack shorwave radio and so far I have seen a tremendous change in the reception of shortwave stations. I am now getting in stations more clearer thanks to this antenna. I recomend this product for anyone who would like a cheap way to impove the reception of a shorwave radio. For this price, this is a good antenna.

Works great with my Grundig,

I'm not sure why this didn't work on the earlier reviewer's Grundig. I attached it to the antenna on my Grundig pocket radio and had great results, really strengthened the signal. This is pretty clearly a generic antenna that would work on most if not all radios. I'm very pleased with its performance. My only complaint is that the spool is cheap and difficult to rewind.

Since my home owners association doens't allow out side antennas I tried this ANT-60. It gave me about 3db more gain. The fade is not eliminated in weak signals but reduced. Also I can listen to 20 meter Ham fairly well, which was almost impossible before. There may be better antennas like the window quads, but there isn't a handier one.

If you don't want to spend much money for improved reception on a portable SW radio, this is a good choice. I purchased one and it really does help bring in signals that are too weak when using only the built-in telescoping antenna.
This is a handy little portble antenna.

A great antenna for travel and home use!,

I bought this antenna for my Grundig YB400PE, and it is great. Without it, the BBC World Service is audible, but filled with static. With the reel antenna out the window and clipped on a tree, it comes in clear and static-free, which is great for SW reception! Also, it's great for traveling, when you can't set up a 50' longwire out the back door. I can hear the BBC, RCI, Radio Moscow, and even Radio Australia from a hotel room (!) It's not a replacement for a massive long wire and grounding system, but for the price and ease of use it can't be beat.

This is a great product. I have a cheap Radio Shack SW radio that has a hard time picking up and holding a signal. With this Antenna fully extended we were able to pick up and hold all kinds of programs, Australia, China, Brazil etc.

A very useful, simple accessory,

I have two Eton (Grundig) radios. Both the S350DL and the mini300 are good radios for me. The addition of this useful little accessory, this random wire, has made both radios even better receivers.
In short, sometimes the additional antenna helps with reception, sometimes the effect is negligible, in a few instances it is best to disconnect the antenna. In talking to a friend who is very knowledgeable about all things radio, this is what can be expected of this type of simple, easy to use, equipment. I do use this antenna in conjunction with a grounding wire when using the S350DL, and I find the combination to be very effective. The sensible adapter clip works fine with either radio's antenna. Were I to recommend any improvements to this product (I am doing so here), I'd suggest the addition of a sort of lock-in-place device, such as one often finds on tape measures, or fishing spools. The strap is handy, but a hook of some sort off of the spool case would also be a useful feature. Of course, one can fashion a hook and employ it with the strap to partially work around this. These are suggestions from an "indoor user", stringing about windows and curtains where these sort of features would be quite useful, and the kind of user likely to gain in numbers over time. Overall, this is a very useful device for better SW listening. I'd recommend this simple antenna to anyone who is looking for a way to easily improve SW reception. It's not a panacea for SW reception issues, but it certainly does help one's reception in a lot of circumstances. The reasonable price and super saver delivery are also positive factors. |
