3.0 out of 5 stars The WR-1 is excellent, but....
I was looking for a quality radio for my office. Since I own several Sangean products including the CC Plus and the RS-330 clock radio, I selected the WR-1 because of my experience with the quality of their products.

The "Sangean quality" and excellent physical design is without question present in the WR-1. Here' the "however". This radio has far too much...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling Radio- Super for AM DXing, September 28, 2004
This review is from: Sangean WR-1 FM/AM Wood-Cabinet Radio (Black Cabinet, Silver Face) (Electronics)
Hey folks its Vince the radioman , I have a vast collection of radios and love to do side by side compares and share them with you . ....... a SPARKLING radio . Price , size and performance ---outstanding . First off , I bought the radio to explore the AM capabilities . It is an analog radio which for AM DXing I find to be better than digital . Somehow , the digital tuner cleans up the signal too much and eliminates the far off broadcasts . I was very pleasantly surprised at the selectivity , sensativity and dynamic range . OUTSTANDING ! The WR1 comes with screw terminals for the AM antenna hookup with a ground ......thats exactly what is needed for DXing . From my home in NYC ( near the shore on Staten Is. ) I received DW , Radio Japan , Radio Peking , Radio Budpest ..etc with my Terk AM advantage antenna . WHOA! Better than any other radio I have , including the Grundig S350 , the CC radio , Sony SW77 and so on. For FM listeners the sound and bass response are wonderful . In some of the prior reviews Ive read comments about too much bass . I found that it was a bit deep but at times perfect . Compared to the Tivoli the FM reception , sound and bass are about the same . However , the AM is miles beyond . Love it , worth it , BUY IT!! Highly recommended .

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait, January 14, 2004

The new WR-1 produces very good sound for jazz, chamber music and other music that dosen't require window shaking bass. Bass is good for such a small package. The controls have a quality feel and the radio is reasonably attractive. Assembly quality seems to be high. FM reception is good with either the built in or external antenna. Two minor design complaints: The power/band selector control makes it necessary to turn through AM to get to FM. This is a slight nuisance as I don't listen to music on AM. The power cord protrudes from the back of the radio about 1 1/2 inches making it impossible to place it against the wall behind my kitchen counter. Otherwise, I am very satisfied with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whats not to like?, April 6, 2004

Let me agree with all of the positive comments other reviewers before me have made. As for the negatives in the 1/14/04 letter, I can assure you that the plug length and the fact one must dial past AM to reach the FM band in no way compromises the quality of the Sangean WR-1.

I also own a Bose Wave radio with CD. I've always thought it to be a a good radio with good tone. But, my new Sangean WR-1 has every bit as good tone, especially on the bass notes. And, the Sangean has superior reception of FM stations. Stations which come in fuzzy on the Bose come in clear as a bell on the Sangean, even with no external antenna.

Conclusion: If you don't need a CD player, the sound is at least equal to the Bose and reception is even better. And the Bose costs $500 vs. $110 for the Sangean. As a fringe benefit, the Sangean is more compact, taking up less room on your table, dresser or desk, and can be used with earphones. What's not to like?

5.0 out of 5 stars I'ts True, January 10, 2005

Sometime last year, after hearing the Boston Acoustics Receptor and deciding that it was too expensive, began looking for alternatives and turned up the Sangean WR1. I eventually took the plunge and I have to say that practically all of the good things reflected in the reviews here are true. It tunes in and holds a station well and it really sounds awesome! One reviewer here spoke of an overpowering bass and I usually take that to mean muddy or coming at the expense of the other frequencies in the spectrum. I've had no such experience. Where do you find a little radio with the headroom of seven watts?! I should mention too that it looks cool with its lighted analog dial. Yeah Tivoli and even Emerson make similar products, but this is the one for me and I would recommend it to anyone.

I love this item. Couldn't bring myself to shell out the bucks for the Bose and am smugly pleased I didn't. This is a must-have in my kitchen.

However, if you need a clock and presets but still want great sound, I recommend the Boston Accoustics Recepter Radio. It's got comparable sound and has similar reception and sound integrity. It also avoids over-designed buttons and "features". It runs about $50 more.

It's such a great radio and so attractive in appearance, performance, and cost that I have one in the kitchen, one in the garage and one in my office. The sound is so warm, powerful and vibrant. Can one ever have too much bass? For music, never. A very solid and reliable piece of equipment. I'll probably get one more for the bedroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, February 3, 2004

This review is from: Sangean WR-1 FM/AM Wood-Cabinet Radio (Black Cabinet, Silver Face) (Electronics)
This radio is a GREAT BUY ... i would gladly pay 2 times the price for the sound you get ,i own a bose wave radio and at less then one third the price this radio blows it away ,true the boses radio is stereo but with the speakers only about six inches apart just how much stereo are you really getting ,dont get me wrong i love my boses wave ,but the sangean is awsome ,the sound doesnt seem to come from the radio ,it seems to come from the whole room , one more thing ,i read a review where the person said they didnt like the fact the power cord stuck out from the back about and inch and a half ,well you dont want to place the WR1 flat up on the wall because it has a speaker port on the back and needs the space for you to get the full sound ,all in all a perfect radio ,thanks sangean ...Bob VanBuskirk

I purchased this radio because of the review that stated "FM reception is good with either the built in or external antenna." We have terrible FM reception in our neighborhood.

I am very impressed with the reception from our new Sangean and we aren't even using the external antenna!

Nice little radio with neat features, such as 12 volt input option and external antenna jacks. It has really nice sound for such a small radio, with great bass and midrange response. Great tuning, and superb sensitivity. Dial is nicely illuminated for night viewing. Overall, a great little radio! The best table radio I have ever had!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, Resonant, Rich, September 21, 2004

I've had my WR-1 for about a year now, and I'm very happy with it. Weighed against similar units made by Bose, the WR-1's sound is better and has a much lower price tag, making it a huge deal. I have mine on a bookshelf with the back of the unit perhaps four or five inches from a wood-paneled wall; when turned on, this radio simply fills the room (and a very large room, it is!) with clear, rich sound. Tuning is easy with the large knob and reception is sharp and strong. This radio is perfect for large, common areas in a home, such as the kitchen or living room. I'm buying a second one for my workshop, too!
