5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Stoneware for Entertaining
I've had my Sango Nova Blue Stoneware for 10 months. It is fabulous. The value for such excellent quality makes this a must have set in any color. My stoneware looks as if I had bought it yesterday! I'm now searching for additional pieces to complete my set. There is so much to choose from. Everything from canisters to lasagna bakers coordinate!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not microwave/dishwasher safe?, October 27, 2004
I go a long way back with Sango Nova Brown dinnerware. I bought twelve placesettings when they first came out, and I love their quiet, almost contemplative look on the table. The color graduations give them character and depth. For a simple plate, they are beautiful.

BUT ...

About six months after I bought the placesettings, some of the plates came out of the dishwasher with a caramelized smattering of spots. At first I thought my dishwasher wasn't working properly, but then I started noticing the same strange gooey spots and streaks when I removed the dishes from the microwave. Not all plates (and none of the bowls) had this problem, so I was able to isolate the problem ones.

After a year of this, I called Sango to complain. I didn't expect anything - maybe a "Thanks - we'll look at the line." The customer service rep was shocked that I had this problem and actually sent me, free of charge, eight new placesettings. Talk about excellent and caring customer service! I threw out all the damaged plates and began anew. Two years later, the problems are just beginning to surface again, not in the dishwasher but in the microwave.

The mugs in this set are perfect for keeping coffee warm since they are deep, but don't pull one out of the microwave without a potholder, as the handles get hot (but don't carmelize).

I still love the way this set looks - and I've supplemented it with accessories from both this line and the differently colored ones. I just wish I could trust it in the microwave when reheating food.

1.0 out of 5 stars blotchy color, February 1, 2004
By
I also bought the Nova Green set for four. They looked great out of the box, but if food gets left on the plates for an extended period (like overnight) then it affected the look and color. You could see where the food was. It took away some of the shine and left the color faded. No amount of washing or use of cleansers has been able to restore the original color. So I ended up with faded blotches here and there. I'm disappointed enough to shop for replacements.

I would also like to mention that these plates chipped and broke quite easily. I have since purchased some Dansk dinnerware and have been extremely pleased.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THESE DISHES!!!, January 13, 2006
I got these dishes for my wedding and loved them at first! I liked the unique color but found that their claims to be dishwasher and microwave safe were untrue! They came out of the dishwasher the first time with a spotty, streaky film on them which never came off. I came to accept this, but again became dissatisfied when I started noticing small cracks in the center of my dinner plates. Over the course of about 8 months of use in both the dishwasher and microwave, these small cracks turned into larger cracks until one day one of my dishes came out of the dishwasher split right down the middle into two pieces! I was shocked, but still thought maybe I'd done something wrong.. I was going to accept this one broken dish, until I had two more exit the dishwasher in this same condition within 2 weeks time. So, basically, these dishes only have a life span of one year! Luckily I'd registered for them at BB&B and they took them back once I showed them that 9 out of 12 of my dinner plates had either broken or were completely cracked down the middle and ready to break. I then bought the Fusion Wasabi dinnerware from BB&B, which has the same basic look, but is slightly more Asian inspired. It cost a bit more, but I've had no problems with the new set at all! Stay away from Sango!

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Dishes, but....., January 7, 2004
By A Customer
These dishes look nice with a lot of different decors in my opinion...I received these dishes in the green color and loved them...until i started washing them and actually eating on them. They claim to be dishwasher safe, but probably 25% or more of these dishes I used got permanent spots and streaks on them when i washed them in the dishwasher...it was like the finish was ruined or something. So if you plan on actually using these dishes, I'd look for something else-- the santa fe type look is very similar to these.....

1.0 out of 5 stars Microwave Safe? Only if it means it doesn't explode in there..., February 22, 2007
I own the graphite style of this set. I was originally very happy with the purchase - the set looked great, didn't chip easily, and was a great size.

After a year of use I've come up with a list of problems:

The clear glazed surface on the plates and bowls can be scored by utensils which allows water/dirt to penetrate to the porous ceramic below leaving stains that cannot be removed.

The semi-matte finish acquires a "powdery", almost bleached, look to it after many washings (says dishwasher safe, guess that means the colors don't wash away immediately)

My biggest complaint: We bought these because they were "microwave safe". I don't know what microwave safe means to most people, but it means to me that I could put a plate, bowl or cup in the microwave, heat up the contents, and then safely remove the object and use it. In the case of the set I purchased, it only seems to mean that the item placed in the microwave will not explode.

Unfortunately in the case of the Sango Graphite set, it means that the contents of the set are sheilded by the (plate/bowl/cup) and that the contents will emerge warm at best while you burn your hand attempting to extract the (plate/bowl/cup) that has soaked all of the energy up from the microwave. They get VERY hot! (Cup of water heated for 2 mins results in water temperature of 120F while cup surface is 170F!) I've only broken 2 items from the set, both times I dropped the items after getting them partly out of the microwave and realizing that my fingers were being burned (first time I thought it was a fluke, second time I learned my lesson) and dropped the item on the hard stove surface below the microwave.

I emailed Sango several times and received no response at all.

While I liked the set a lot initially, I have been very disappointed over time with its quality. I will never purchase another from Sango again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Coffee Cups Crack when you pour coffee in them, January 18, 2009

This review is from: Sango Nova 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 (Kitchen)
I am extremely disappointed in this product. I bought a set of 12 about 2 months ago and only have 8 plates left. They break as easily as bone china which is not practical for an everyday set. The biggest problem we have is with the coffee cups. You pour hot coffee into them and hear a loud pop and then you have coffee spilling all over your counter top. They split/crack right open. Out of 12 coffee cups, I have 4 left. Only 4. That's ridiculous. It's becoming a waste of time to keep trying to replace them. I will never buy a Sango dish product again. Don't waste your money

5.0 out of 5 stars Really nice dinnerware, October 17, 2006

We registered for these, in blue, and I could not be happier. I'm actually shocked to see reviews that say these are fragile, or can't be microwaved. I have found these dishes very sturdy.

My silly husband keeps leaving the butter dish precariously on the door of the fridge, and it has fallen out several times onto a linoleum floor and not even chipped. I actually smacked one of the mugs into the counter once, and it chipped the counter - mug unscathed! This compared to our previous Ikea dishes, that would break if nudged in the sink.

I also microwave these constantly, particularly the small plate, and put them in the dishwasher, and haven't had any problems yet. I've had them six months.

I love the color, and the size, of these dishes. Especially the mug; there is nothing more satisfying than settling down with this deep mug filled with coffee in the morning. Previous reviews are correct, the insulation on these dishes is spectacular. The bowls are also big and shallow, perfect for cereal. I really adore these dishes.

5.0 out of 5 stars High style, affordable price, July 2, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
You can set a most elegant table with Sango Nova Black dinnerware. I see in the reviews a lot of people find them fragile. I disagree. I'm the only female in this house, my dishes get handled by a houseful of hurried hungry men and the dishes have endured very well indeed. At the same time, they still set a beautiful table for dinner guests. I'm a Sango fan from long ago, I feel they deliver a grand product and they offer top notch customer service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pretty, practical dishes, January 17, 2006
My husband and I also recieved these dishes as a wedding gift, and I have to say that we both like them. We had an especially difficult time agreeing on a dinnerware set...I thought we'd never make it to the altar! However, I stumbled across this set and have not regretted it yet. We have had them for roughly 8 months now, with no issues regarding dishwasher and microwave use like others have reported. No chips, or cracks, and I've accidentally banged them around a bit on the counters and shelves not paying close enough attention when putting them away. I also like the wide variety of coordinating pieces that are available. We also have the canister set, 2 serving bowls, the mixing bowl set, 2 serving platters, 4 large mugs, and the pasta bowl (we entertain a bit.) They look stunning in the cabinet (not plain old boring white) and we have not regretted adding them to our registry. Can't imagine why others have had issues with the dishwasher. One note though...I never let my heat cycle dry the dishes, I prefer to open the door when the wash/rinse cycle shuts off and let them air dry (in my mind, fewer water spots??) Maybe the lack of intense heat as the dishes dry has something to do with ours not cracking...just a guess!
