Adding to the confusion is the fact that each manufacturer has multiple models with slightly different names and features -- comparing them is a nightmare.
Once I had them narrowed down I attempted to see each in person at local re-sellers -- all were flimsy, plastic junk.
At some point I started investigating commercial vacuums on the premise that they would be built for heavy-duty continuous use.
That search led me to the Sanitaire line. I quickly narrowed the search to an upright with a disposable bag to keep the dust down.
(note that other models have either a shake-out, reusable bag, or a dirt cup).
I settled on the SC889a.
It is nothing more or less than what it claims. It is simply, but sturdily built.
Using the higher of the two available speeds sucks the cleaner right down to the floor and you can hear tiny bits of debris as they are lifted from the depths of the carpet pile.
It is important to understand that agitation is incredibly important in carpet cleaning. It is the equivalent of hanging a carpet over the line and beating it (as used to be done).
Suction alone is NOT sufficient -- if it were, you could do a good job of carpet cleaning with a powerful shop vac -- but the truth is, you can't.
The Sanitaire has a polished chrome agitator bar with bristles which can be user-replaced if it ever becomes necessary.
When combined with a powerful 7 amp motor, there is no place for dirt to hide.
A couple of random notes -- like another reviewer, mine too arrived with a few lumps on the metal shroud -- no big deal, and no effect on performance, but worth noting. Also, it comes with a LOT of cord -- 50 feet! -- but it is intended for commercial use after all.
e I was so impressed while repairing an older sanitaire at work. The design is simple and extremely easy to work on. Despite what I estimate to be thousands of hours of hard commercial use bearings, switches, and other components were still good on the old sanitaire.
This is a heavy duty no frills vac. Because it has no hose attachments I use it in conjunction with a dust buster which makes an efficient combination. With simple maintenance this vac should last a lifetime.
I started to think about what we really needed. A bagless is actually a pain and we had to replace the sponges etc. Washing out sponges to keep stuff from blowing out of the canister is also crazy. More work than I expected.
I cleaned carpets as a side job when I was younger and this is the brand of vacuum they used. A little more plastic now than 25 yrs before but still weighs three times as much as our Oreck that we use upstairs.
This vacuum is really nice. We never use crevice tools. We use this on stairs as well. The weight is very manageable. It practically pulls itself.
We vacuumed the living room with our Oreck XL and then put the Sanitaire on high. I couldn't believe how much stuff I heard coming out of the rug. Very impressive.
I priced the Dysons which have mediocre reviews and are two-three times the price for a piece of plastic. We have a small handheld vac we use on the car etc and so we have that for the couch when necessary. (Movie night with popcorn, for example.)
If you don't actually use the on board tools, don't mind changing a bag periodically, and are looking to just vacuum the carpet, this vac will impress you.
PROS: 1. It seems to be sucking up the dirt well but it is new. 2. The materials it is made of, seem to be very sturdy and it has a lot of metal. It has a very low profile and gets under furniture very well. 3. It flattens out to the point I can get totally under my beds. It is very heavy, but it
maneuvers easily with the ball bearing wheels.. 4. The bags are very easy to install. 5. It has a 2 year warranty. 6.. It is not made in China, 7. You can get replacement parts. 8. In my area, there are a number of places that repair Sanitaire. 8. Reasonably priced compared to many other vacuums.
CONS: 1. It is very heavy and may not be suited for two story homes. If you are strong, and consider lugging a vac up the stairs a good aerobic workout.. then go for it. 2. Eats up long fringe even on the low setting. I have some smaller area hooked rugs and I have to vac on low and be very careful to keep away from the edges as they will be eaten by the vac. My rugs are mostly very low pile Keristan's and, on these heavier rugs, it cleans them easly without a problem. 3. The 50' cord may be good for ball rooms but I find it difficult. I will say I am working on it and I can clean most of the house with just one plug in. However, the cord is very heavy duty and it gets caught on furniture.Read more ›
