Sure I expected a new vacuum to clean my carpet better, but what I didn't expect was for my rug to look five years younger afterwards! My matted carpet was in pretty bad shape and I had little hope of it lasting much longer until I couldn't stand looking at it anymore. 2.0 out of 5 stars Just ok and not worth the money
this vacuum is equal in quality to the $50-$70 vacuums you can get at walmart. the suction is ok at best. it is heavy to move around when vacuuming. i owned this model for about a year before trading it in for something better. i bought a simplicity synergy and was well worth the money. the sanitaire was a waste of money and i should have saved my money to put towards a...

4.0 out of 5 stars Made my carpet jump back to life -, March 3, 2007
Sure I expected a new vacuum to clean my carpet better, but what I didn't expect was for my rug to look five years younger afterwards! My matted carpet was in pretty bad shape and I had little hope of it lasting much longer until I couldn't stand looking at it anymore. But after a good cleaning with this Sanitaire S782 I was very happy to see that my rug seemed to have new life in it and frankly looked like the rug was 5 years younger. I am simply amazed.

Dual motors allow for stopping the direct drive brush assembly going over hardwood floors while still providing lots of suction power which is also good for vacuuming the edges of scatter rugs so they don't get sucked up into the roller. And if something does get caught in the roller the motor shuts off instantly and automatically and you just have to hit the reset button after clearing.

This machine uses bags that are inexpensive and is rated at lightweight commercial use. It's fairly light at 14 pounds, and I like the folding handle making it easy to store away. The only con seems to be the high pitched motor noise which is annoying but I am already getting used to it.

After feeling like I was in a maze of new vacuum options I feel I made a really good choice without spending a fortune.

5.0 out of 5 stars convenient compact, February 14, 2007
Why I bought it:

1. space-saving size: A) takes up a tiny 10 X 12 inch patch of closet space; B) the folding handle lets my hanging coats easily clear it; C) all needed attachments are on-board (I haven't needed the provided extension hose).

2. convenient operation: A) flip up the handle, turn the quick-release hook to free the cord, and you're ready to go (my canister model required 6 mechanical and electrical connections to prepare it for carpet use); B) converting to bare floor operation is as easy as sliding a switch so the brush no longer rotates, and it actually picks up the dust and debris rather than chasing it around the floor; C) quickly and easily converts to above-floor cleaning with on-board hose, wands, and tools.

3. certified performance: The Carpet and Rug Institute lists the S782 along with the similar commercial model SC785 as passing its standards for soil removal, dust containment, and carpet appearance retention.

4. inexpensive consumables (prices from Sanitaire's website): 3-pack of bags $3.49, belt $2.39 (and this is a cogged, non-stretch belt for longer life), exhaust filter $1.99, motor filter $1.49 (and the motor and exhaust filters can be cleaned for extended life). These are refreshing prices after reading about the $20.00 filters needed on some other vacuums.

Summary: I find the S782 a convenient, pleasant, and effective vacuum cleaner, leading me to use it more often than my previous machine (no, really, that's a good thing!).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great things come in small packages., October 23, 2009
This review is from: Sanitaire by Electcrolux S782AT Lightweight Vacuum Cleaner (Sanitaire 782, Sanitaire S 782 AT) (Kitchen)
I looked and looked for a vacuum cleaner that suited my needs and this one really surpassed all my expectations. It is small and maneuverable, lightweight, and it cleans well. The handle folds down to a compact unit for easy storage. It is inexpensive, but is built to last and works as well as vacuum cleaners that cost up to $900.00. It has two motors so that I can switch from area rugs to bare floors to carpet in a jiffy. And if it sucks up the edge of an area rug, the beater brush motor automatically shuts down so that I can rescue the rug and the belt won't break.

One word about area rugs: This vacuum will not clean lightweight rugs, such as bathmats. If the area rug is small and light enough to pick up and shake out, that is the best way to clean it because the suction on this little vacuum cleaner is strong and will suck up any rug that does not have enough substance to hold its own. My home is all tile and hardwood floors, with large, heavy, good quality woolen area rugs. I do not have trouble when I vacuum the edges of my large, room sized rugs, but I never try to vacuum my smaller bath mats, because they just get sucked up. However, there is no harm done even if the rug edge gets caught in the beater brush, since the motor stops so that I can get it out and continue my vacuuming. All I have to do to take out whatever is caught in the beater brush, push the re-set button and finish what I was doing. I have had it for six months and have never had to replace a broken belt, yet.

I have a three story house, and I planning to purchase two more of these little powerhouses - one for each floor of my home. It is so small and space saving, that I have plenty of room to store three of them.

I can't think of much negative to say about it. I did have to get used to the small bag size - the vacuum cleaner is small, and so is the bag, but I can still clean my whole house without replacing. However I usually have to change bags before using it again. I am giving it only 4 stars because it cannot be taken apart and cleaned by the owner - the housing is screwed together by literally DOZENS OF SCREWS, and even if you could take it apart, you would never get it back together. It is not consumer friendly in this way. Because of the built in safeguards against something getting caught in the beater brush, you seldom need to open the housing, but if you do, you will have to take it to a repair shop and have a professional do it. Once, I tried to vacuum up spilled powder that was too fine for this vacuum to handle. The housing got completely gummed up with the dust and I had to take it in for repair. Other brands come apart with 2 or 3 screws and can be easily cleaned by the owner and reassembed in about 10 minutes. This one took days, and it was expensive. That is the biggest fly in the ointment, but even so, I still like for all it's other features.

Vacuum cleaners are usually all hype, but this one is almost perfect for my needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Versatile product, happy with purchase, March 9, 2010

This review is from: Sanitaire by Electcrolux S782AT Lightweight Vacuum Cleaner (Sanitaire 782, Sanitaire S 782 AT) (Kitchen)
I bought this vacuum after reading the many positive reviews. I was looking for a lightweight vacuum that could easily and quickly work on several different floor types, rugs, and carpets, and this vacuum does the job well, for the most part. On first use I was concerned when it didn't move, in the carpet mode, on my large (12x15 feet) area rugs; it seemed to stick to the rug. But after a few hard pushes, it then started rolling correctly. Perhaps the roller brushes needed a little loosening to get going.

Pros: Extremely easy to go from hardwood surface to rugs/carpets with just a switch of the button. Everything needed to clean with is on board, accessible, and easy to switch to. The fold down handle makes it manageable to carry from area to another. The bonus extension hose allows for more flexibility for getting to hard to reach areas. Did a fantastic job on area rugs that my other three types of vacuums haven't been able to clean as well.

Cons: Has a high-pitched sound that is somewhat annoying. I noticed that in the floor mode, the vacuum tends to blow dust bunnies away from the vacuum unless I move the vacuum slowly. The floor mode does not do a very good job of picking up the fine dust that clings to hardwood, so I still need to use a vacuum with longer wands and floor brush to remove the fine dust. Speaking of brush attachments, the one that comes with the vacuum is somewhat small with very short stiff bristles. However, I found that some of the brushes from my other vacuums fit snugly on to the crevice part of the wand, so I'm able to use what I consider better brushes than the one included with this vacuum.

Having owned many types of vacuums, I think this is the most versatile and useful vacuum I've yet found. It is reasonably priced and hopefully will last a while. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a vacuum to be used on variable surfaces.

One caution about ordering this vacuum: the vendor ships it with the original cardboard carton as the shipping container. The carton is not sturdy enough for shipping, and I received a carton with several dents and major rips in the carton. Fortunately, there was no damage to the vacuum, but the vendor really should be enclosing the vacuum and carton within a sturdier shipper.

4.0 out of 5 stars great vacuum, February 4, 2010

This review is from: Sanitaire by Electcrolux S782AT Lightweight Vacuum Cleaner (Sanitaire 782, Sanitaire S 782 AT) (Kitchen)
This is a wonderful vacuum. I didn't have any expectations when I bought it. I have dogs one being a big time shedder. My previous vacuum was a miele which cost the earth and didn't pick up the dog hair well and I was not at all happy with. The suction on this vacuum is wonderful. i have four sets of stairs and the attachment works well. This vacuum is lightweight and compact to store. the end result is I am happy to vacuum and my carpets look great. my only wish is that the vacuum bags had a bigger capacity

4.0 out of 5 stars Good little vacuum, January 5, 2010

We bought this thinking it was a "regular" size vacuum but to our surprise when it came it was a "lightweight". We really like it. It only has two settings, floor or carpet but it works wonderfully. I like it so much better than the last two vacuums that we paid way more money for that ended up crapping out on us. Very lightweight and I love the bag system. It is much less maintenance than the bagless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and lightweight, January 26, 2010

Couldn't ask for more (except for a cordless to work this well, but at this point I don't think that's ever going to happen.) This little guy is as powerful as my full-sized vacuum, and it is so much easier to use. Not just because of the small size, but all the attachments (except the longer hose extension, which I don't use anyway) fit right on the vacuum. Also, I don't have to attach the hose: it is ready to go any time.

In an ideal world, a bagless and cordless vac would be this powerful, but I don't think that's realistic. I'm sticking with what works!! I'm very happy with the cleaning by this guy, and after you change the bag, the suction is brand new again. Top handle folds down and fits in a tiny space. Also, the cord length is great, and I only have to change the plug once to do our whole 3-bedroom ranch. Great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great vacuum!, March 30, 2010
This review is from: Sanitaire by Electcrolux S782AT Lightweight Vacuum Cleaner (Sanitaire 782, Sanitaire S 782 AT) (Kitchen)
I am a commercial housekeeper. I use this vacuum many times per week, in and out of my car- I love it!! I have had it for almost 3 years and it is a little wobbly, but still works wonderfully! The only drawback is the small sized bags, I get several packages of bags at a time. This vacuum has the ability to turn off the roller brush, which makes it easily vacuum hard surfaces without the brush spitting the dirt back out. I HIGHLY recommend this product. I have tried SO many vacuums, including the Dyson, and consistently Eureka products rate much higher in my opinion. They are lightweight, consistently good sucking, and, never clog. (My Dyson DID!!) Buy it, you will not be sorry.

After using it for about a month now, this vacuum cleaner seems to be very good. It picks up nicely and the suction is fine.... but, most of all, the noise level is much more acceptible than my older Hoover upright, which is very loud and difficult to be around.
