RAID Roaming
To increase protection, each RAID configuration is stored in both unit and the RAID controller card. In case of a hard drive and controller failure, RAID configuration is preserved allowing the administrator to move the complete RAID set to another system without loosing RAID configuration and most importantly, the data inside the RAID set.

Advance Web Based WebGUI Management
Built-in Web based GUI management tools provide all the necessary tools to create, manage and monitor your system. Real-time hard drives and RAID status, event log and e-mail notification of the RAID system can be setup in one easy to use interface.

The Sans Digital TowerRAID TR8M+B is an eSATA port expander box. The RAID functions are all handled by the included Highpoint RocketRAID 620 series SATA RAID card. Without using the supplied card, the TowerRAID is simply a port expander only and has no other intelligent functions built in.

The front panel is clean and shows 8 status LED's for each of the 8 drives, a power light, a link light showing connectivity to your computer and the master power button. The case itself is sheet metal with the exception of the front door cover (plastic) and drive bays (metal trays with plastic latches and facings). There are two eSATA port connectors in the rear to connect to the eSATA expansion bridge. The hotswap drive bays seem relatively sturdy and function fairly well to easily eject and replace the drives as needed. There are no vibration dampeners on the drive bays and drive mounts, so be aware of this when you go to choose hard drives. Some "green" drives have been known to produce higher than average vibrations in RAID cases.

I had thought from the pictures that this case was brushed metal throughout. It is not. The entire front of the unit is textured plastic resin and matching paint over it to match the finish of the product. If anything, I would knock off one star due to this fact as I was looking for a solid metal case and chose this over a competitor because of this. Judging by the photos you could expect it to be all metal, but it is metal and painted resin. It is actually lighter than expected because of this. So not sure if that counts in for anything or not, but it is only about 4 lbs or so empty. The case dimensions are approximately 6.5" x 13.5" x 13.5". So slightly smaller and slightly wider than a slimline tower.

I had a prior generation of this unit that was riddled with problems. After 13 months the PCIe card died on the unit while I was expanding the RAID 5 to add in one additional 2TB drive. Since the card died during the expansion process, I lost 10TB worth of data.

The new version of this unit has been "improved." So I purchased anew unit and began re-acquiring the data for the last 6 weeks and have not completed yet. Now the new unit's PCIe card just died within 5 weeks. Just long enough that I can no longer return it to Amazon. My past dealings with Sans Digitals customer service was horrible. I expect the the same will happen now when I try and return the card for a replacement.

Don't purchase unless you don't care about losing your data or not being able to access your data when the card breaks after the warranty period or return period has expired.

I purchased this device as well as a few 3TB drives to go with the 4x 2TB and 2x 3TB drives I already had. The initial device that was sent to me functioned correctly as far as a disk enclosure goes. The included raid card was detected and worked fine in my server. All drive bays powered up and all 8 drives showed up correctly in bios and later after some tinkering, in my ubuntu OS. However the status lights on the front have been an issue.

There are two rows of lights on the front. 8 drive status lights in a 4x2 grid as well as 2 link lights for the esata connections and a data xfer light to show overall activity. The first unit's top row, top link light and activity light were permanently dark. Had I not seen and accessed all 8 disks, I would've thought the drives or bays or link were bad. Amazon is awesome and I'm really glad I used them on this. They immediately sent me a replacement that just arrived today. The replacement, however, also has a row of lights blank. This time it's the bottom row. It still functions just as well as the first box and my ZFS volume remounted seamlessly. Still, I'm getting yet another replacement. Hopefully 3rd time's the charm.

It's quite possible that the feed for the front display is lose or somehow repairable but the screws keeping the case on this thing are not removable as far as I can tell. I'll update this review once I get the 2nd replacement.

--- Edit: 04/30/2012 ---

I received my 2nd replacement (3rd overall of units I've tried) and I'm happy to say everything is working fine. I'm actually quite impressed now. I had two power outages during the building of my two raid volumes and the raid system picked up where it left off both times.

There is only limited Linux support (against what the listing says). The latest driver they released publicly was for something like 3.01. After getting in contact with support I got source for the driver that compiled after some tweaks for 3.11 (not something I would recommend to someone new to Linux). Once installed it picked up the drives as JBOD no problem (the bios setup still worked fine).

I ended up using MDADM to run raid instead of the built in due to the reliability issues so many other reviews pointed out. since the drives are in JOBD it seems to be working ok. HOWEVER, its much slower than I was expecting. On an 8 drive raid 6 I'm averaging around 100MB read and write when I was getting 500-600 when they were directly attached to the mainboard.

With 8 drives in it and spinning it does get a tad toasty. each drive hovers right around 41c/104f which is alright, but could be a bit better. The fan on the back is constantly pumping out warm air.

It is reasonably quite and it looks great. It doesn't scratch terribly easy even though it all a brushed plastic on the outside.

- Ubuntu Server 13.10
- Kernel 3.11.0-14 generic
- Precision R5400
