Biography

Singer-songwriters are meant to trade in whimsical pleasures, in the soft strums of a guitar, in worlds so delicate and small they could shatter at a single touch. Martha Wainwright doesn't trade alongside them. Back with a second record that's both tender and tough, beautiful and brutal, and simmering with invention and confidence, Martha forgot to read the rulebook. Either that, or ... Editorial Reviews

Subtitled: Martha Wainwright's Piaf Record. 2009 album from the talented singer/songwriter (and sister of Rufus), a tribute to the great French vocalist Edith Piaf. Recorded live over the course three nights in New York, Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris features 15 Piaf songs chosen from more than 300 that Wainwright researched via friend Hal Wilner. Wainwright called upon some of the best "downtown" NY musicians and worked to keep the quirky twists of Piaf's original productions while adding some bold new strokes. The result is a daring, powerful and personal work that - while not for every palate - challenges and then rewards.

Format: Audio CD
It was the last benefit of the summer in the Hamptons. Rufus Wainwright and Norah Jones were the headliners. Martha Wainwright - sister of Rufus, a comparative unknown --- was the opening act. As she came on stage, the audience was checking its make-up, texting, drinking, chatting.

Talk about your uphill swim! Martha Wainwright began singing --- in French --- an Edith Piaf song. The talking continued. She put a hand in the air, lost in the world of France's most celebrated singer. In another minute, she had the attention of those inattentive Hamptonites. In ten, she pretty much owned them.

How did she do it?

Well, she has a greater ability to cram emotion into her voice than any female singer since --- let's go out on a limb here --- Janis Joplin. An outrageous claim? Watch her sing "Hallelujah" with her brother. She's loud, raspy, passionate --- but then, this is the woman who has titled a CD "I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too."

Happily, that's only half of her.

The other half is that raised hand, open, slightly cupped. I see that hand up in one of her slower songs, and --- this may sound creepy, but bear with me - I can almost feel it against my cheek. Nothing more. Just a touch. But what intimacy in that touch, what kindness! And that makes Martha Wainwright an essential artist for me: She can rasp and she can whisper.

In Martha Wainwright's Piaf Record, she turns a personal exploration into a summiting of Everest --- she does something that's almost impossible to pull off. That is, she doesn't "become" Piaf; that would be a parlor trick.

Having been acquainted with Piaf's music ever since I was a little kid I thought noone could live up to her rendering of her chansons, but Martha is just as strong.

Almost tempted in a simple way: after Edith Piaf it comes Martha Wainwright with Sans Fusils ni souliers a Paris. What a performance! Recommended in every sense.

Ok, so I am a long time listener of the Mcgarrigle's and the Wainwrights.
my issue is that I do not always have the patience to make it through their recordings.
but, oh, I do love them and for years and years I have wanted nothing else than to be adopted into their clan.

This recording is Martha at her BEST.

it actually sounds BETTER because it is live, which i feared. I generally shy away from live records.

Now, I do not speak a word of french, but I have this record on repeat in the kitchen for the last 2 days, and I am not nearly tired of it!

I hope she continues to record more like this.

:)

Thank you, Martha!
