Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 1–On December 24th, Nicholas Duck rushes out to find Santa to tell him what he wants for Christmas and is surprised to find a red coat and a genuine, official Santa hat on his doorstep. He happily puts them on, but is overwhelmed when all of the animals he meets corner him and rattle off their wish lists. Nicholas tries to get away and runs into Santa, at last. He relays the animals' requests, forgetting to ask anything for himself, but later realizes that helping to give to others has made him happier than getting any gift. Nicholas's silliness and frustration will appeal to youngsters as will the simple message. Milgrim's charming digital ink and oil pastel illustrations use a successful mix of narrative text and cartoon balloons to move the story along at a brisk pace. A fun selection for storytime or one-on-one reading.–Maureen Wade, Los Angeles Public Library

5.0 out of 5 stars A cute and clever Christmas tale, April 10, 2009
This review is from: Santa Duck (Hardcover)
Is it better to give or receive? A duck wearing a Santa suit sets out to find Santa to tell him his Christmas list, but instead is beset by other animals wanting to tell him their lists. When he finally meets Santa he tells him everyone else's lists but forgets to tell Santa his own list. He decides this is okay because helping Santa was the best gift...almost. My kindergartener heard this one at school and came home singing "Jingle Quack" and begging me to get this book.

I got this for my 2 1/2 year old daughter and she really enjoyed the book. The illustrations were funny and the jingle quack song is cute. I would definitely recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas fun., December 16, 2011

This review is from: Santa Duck (Hardcover)
I find this book funny for several reasons. First, the things that the animals ask for, i.e. the chicken asks for a helicopter, a hot air balloon, and a hang glider, and a blimp. Second, the duck's confusion about why the animals are sharing their Christmas lists with him. Third, the ending, which I won't mention here so as not to spoil it, just know it is quite amusing. The children I've shared this with quite enjoyed it. The illustrations are very appealing and suit the story quite well. The duck is surprisingly expressive for a duck. There is a nice message here about giving being better than getting..almost.
