A thorough, informative biking guide,

For anyone considering a biking trip out west, this is about as complete a guide as you are likely to find. What is appealing about The Santa Fe Trail by Bicycle is how comprehensive it is, covering everything from very practical information about what to bring on the trip, to history about places all along the trail, and tips at each stage of the journey for enduring a difficult trip. For non-professional cyclists who want to have a Southwest Adventure, biking the Santa Fe Trail is an ideal goal, and this book an excellent guide.

Over the years I've been jigsawing an asphalt free transamerica together, and had hoped that this book would of provided some additional information on alternative routes through this area. It did not. The book lacked useable route maps, and was too chatty. The section on choosing a bike and campgear may be good for the novice, but any experienced long distance rider would care less. For me, my money, and time would of been better spent on a good set of topos, and a few hours of research at a local library. I rate this book at less than 1/2 of a star - good only for those new to touring cycling with only one or two short trips under their belt.
