I saw this movie when it first came on television. It was a Christmas story uniquely told by James Earl Jones. I find when ever James Earl Jones speaks he speaks with clear authority and self pride, which brings a story to life. Many Christmas movies are literally either Black or White, but Santa and Pete revealed a different collaboration...it brought a different flavor to the table that was quite tasteful to my pallet. It didn't take away from the the meaning of Christmas for me as a Christian it actually displayed how God really works in people.

Great movie, but bad discs,

I recorded this movie off of one of the TV networks several years ago and my family watches it every year. As soon as I saw that it was available on DVD, I ordered it. I had to return the disc because it had several BAD glitches throughout the movie. Amazon sent a replacement copy, but it had the same glitches in the same places. Apparently these discs were created from a bad master. Hopefully this will be corrected. No complaints about the movie or Amazon.com, but I am very disappointed, I really want this on DVD.

Saw Santa and Pete on tv and loved it. The idea that Santa doesn't work alone, but has a partner who is actively part of what he does is great, as is the fact that Pete is a Moor, so has dark skin. This way of looking at Santa, the way a family Christmas story is woven into the movie, so that the fascination of a child is part of it and helps finish it, is precious. In addition to being a very heartwarming story, it brings up parts of history that we in the U.S. don't always think of: that there were people of African origin on our continent who were not slaves, but here as free people even from almost the beginning; that other countries don't necessarily have the same traditions around St. Nick that our popular culture has (such as a workshop at the north pole and elf helpers); as well as offering possible ideas for how a saint might have morphed into the Santa Claus we know of, with flying reindeer; the idea of a book of life and the beginnings of a saint in the making are there, too. For those who like these things, it's a fun movie. It's not Hume Cronyn's best acting job, but he did what he could, and others help improve it.
