3.0 out of 5 stars FYI...
This is a North American reissue of her 1997 album, "Santa Rita de Sampa." Late-vintage Brazilian pop-rock from a former member of the legendary band, Os Mutantes.

This former Brasilian-American member of Os Mutantes, a Brasilian late 60's to early 70's band, has released many albums over her 20-year solo career. She is the primiere rock diva of South America. It is a shame that she has not had the following here as she has had at home. I hope with the recently renewed international interest in Os Mutantes that she may enter the limelight here. I've not yet met a Brasilian that did not love her. Her unique rock style would be very acceptable to the ears of North Americans and stands out from the many other excellent Brasilian artists. This CD, released in Brasil as "Santa Rita De Sampa" (same as the title track; Sampa is to Sao Paulo as LA is to Los Angeles), is a self tribute to her long career and reaching the age of 50. There may be some tributes to artists that she likes also. This title track is a bit Santana-like which is not typical of her music and is excellent. The second cut, "Normal Em Curitiba" seems to be a nod to the Stones. When I heard the later cut, "Longe Daqui, Aqui Mesmo", I kept waiting to hear James Taylor pipe in (which did not happen). However, in spite of these comparisons, Rita Lee's music is unique. She is accompanied by other excellent artists in this CD, including her husband, a long recognized rock guitarist back home, and even her son got in the act on this CD, adding some guitar sparks. Some other reveiwer on this website called her "the Carol King of Brazil", an opinion with which I would totally disagree. Although she does have her softer moments, she is uncomparable and extremely witty. This CD contains some excellent pieces of music.
