A Bawdy Enjoyable Romp -- Not for those easily offended,
By A Customer
This review is from: Santa Steps Out: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups (Mass Market Paperback)
I had no idea when I started reading this what I was letting myself in for. The forward does not come close to preparing you for this bawdy, enjoyable journey through the tales of childhood. The mythological aspect is an intriguing start to the book, which quickly descends into an erotic wonderland where Santa is seduced by the Tooth Fairy (even Saints have their weaknesses), an affair that finally comes to a head 20 years later, when Santa confesses to Mrs. Claus that his Yule log has been burning in somebody else's fireplace. It's a page turner from page one. I would recommend this for anybody who wants something unique to add to their bookshelves, but if you are easily offended or lack a sense of humour, this should be one book you should skip.

Mr. Devereaux might find himself on someone's naughty list!,

If "Santa Steps Out" isn't nominated for this year's Bram Stoker Award, it will certainly be a crime! This is this year's winner, hands down! Robert Devereaux does a fiendishly wicked job of casting a new, albeit perverse, light on some old friends from our childhood. Know from the get-go that this novel is not for everyone! But overall, it is a very good read! Just when you think ol' Claus can't possibly sink any lower, we see that he can. Norman Rockwell would have had a grabber if this novel had been around when he was alive. "Santa Steps Out" is very much like a Salvador Dali painting that has been interpreted by Larry Flynt. It's wicked, raunchy and in some areas truly repulsive. What better compliment can one offer for this unique piece of work? If you're going to read this novel, one mustn't be shy or timid. If you can make it through the beginning, you will be compelled to finish. And finish you must! For Mr. Devereaux's "Afterward" is worth reading as well. This is a novel you won't soon forget.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.,

I have never - and I mean never - read a book quite like this. Robert Devereaux has taken the mythical figures of our childhood and recast them as the pagan hedonistic gods they were. Santa begins a torrid affair with the Tooth Fairy. The Easter Bunny is a Peeping Tom. Mrs. Claus plots her revenge. This is the filthiest, funniest most original book I've read in years. It comes in a beautiful signed edition limited to 1000 copies. Get it while you can. This is cutting edge fiction at its best.

I loved this book,

I loved this book with all its sick and twisted ways. I will never look at the Easter Bunny, Santa, Mrs Claus or the Tooth Fairy the same way. I have given this book as a Christmas gift and now own the signed hardcover.

This review is from: Santa Steps Out: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a Christmas book unlike any that have come before it, I'm sure. It's part erotica, part comedy, part horror/fantasy and easily the most original novel I've read in quite a while, as well as an interesting look at modern myths and their pagan roots. If the idea of Santa Claus having a lusty affair with the Tooth Fairy shocks or offends you, don't read this book because that's only the beginning, and you surely won't want to be around for all the things that happen afterward. But if you're open-minded and have a healthy, irreverent sense of humor and an appreciation for the absurd, I can't recommend this book highly enough. I'm going to have to read Mr. Devereaux's other books, because he is a wonderful storyteller!

Robert here. Welcome to my little troublemaker, SANTA STEPS OUT, which has been unavailable for nearly ten years. The formatting problem with the Kindle version, mentioned by an earlier reader, has now been fixed, so download away!

Knee-slapping, erotic and irreverant,
This review is from: Santa Steps Out: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the best books I've ever read. Once the reader gets past the irreverance, picks his or her jaw up off the floor and takes a cold shower, delving back into the pages is an urge that cannot be denied. I couldn't wait to find out how it all ended, and I never wanted it to end. Deveraux, dirty-minded soul that he is, is a master storyteller who takes the reader along in stomach-dropping, spine-tingling loops and dips and swirls. To categorize this book as horror is inaccurate, yet there is no other genre to put it in. It is pure fantasy, both erotic and cerebral, and plops the reader down in the fairylands we dream about as children, but Deveraux's fantasies are oh so much more fun! Thank you for sharing your twisted sugarplum visions, Mr. Deveraux!
Update 8/19/04 - I have a new boyfriend, and if things are still going this well in November, I'm going to start reading him the book beginning Thanksgiving night. I can't wait to share and see his reaction!

This book IS over the top, and will easily offend those who offend easily. That's fine. But the pleasures of this book don't stop at its provocative nature. It's also a genuinely creative, nigh brilliant, meditation on human sexual/romantic relationships, through a lense of cunning myth and trounced commercial archetypes. At the heart of the book, even at its most horrifying, is a nearly spiritual regard for the place of the carnal in our lives, and the spiritual enrichment that comes from the joys of the flesh...however you might find those joys.I highly recommend this. It'll crack you up, it'll keep your attention, and it might even stir your mind.

The holidays will never be the same for me,
By A Customer
This review is from: Santa Steps Out (Hardcover)
I ordered Santa Steps Out last month. Even though it says 6-8 weeks up there, I got mine in about a week. And it was everything I hoped for: nasty, fun, wild, and wicked. I plan on reading this one every year--along with Dickens! Nice job, Mr. Devereaux! You've created a classic.

A deliciously naughty fairy tale,
By A Customer
This review is from: Santa Steps Out (Hardcover)
Finally, the story of Santa every grown-up has wanted to read. An intriguing weave of past and present mythology that enlivens the origins of our favorite childhood myths. Thanks to some divine intervention, Santa and the incredibly sexy and naughty Tooth Fairy cross paths unleashing their buried pasts and desires. Throw in a jealous Mrs. Claus, an insatiably horny easter bunny, Santa's mortal love interest, and watch the mayhem and bloodshed ensue. The story is shocking, appalling, and fills you with disbelief, but you end up enjoying and relishing every page. "Santa Steps Out" is the most creative and thoroughly entertaining book I've read in years.
