Santa and the Three Bears,
By Crawfordville@msn.com (United States of America) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Santa and the Three Bears [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This version of the classic movie deletes the introduction and conclusion "live action" footage from the original Santa & The Three Bears. It's a great kids Christmas story, but leaves out the touching early seens with "Mr. Ranger" and his grandkids.

Classic Christmas Special,

This review is from: Santa and the Three Bears [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of my all time favorite christmas movies. I had no idea why they stopped airing it, but kids everywhere are missing out. This movie made such a lasting impression on me that my husband and I named our dog Nakomi because I remembered the character.

Wonderful story, very poor production...,
This review is from: Santa and the Three Bears (DVD)
Santa and the three Bears is my all time favorite animated feature that I treasure from childhood. No doubt, this is thee program that I must watch each and every Christmas season, and has become treasured by my children as well. In 1987 I taped this program that aired on television. The colors were deep, rich and clear. The sound was crisp. 19 years later, that tape is well loved (used), and although the tape still maintains those qualities; the tape is starting to show its age. Hence, the search for a commerically produced recording.
I searched and searched for a commerically produced recording, and found one in 2001. Unfortunatly, I could only find a VHS recording. No DVD's were to be found. The tape was good except the begining and the ending of the program that had consisted of real life actors (Mr. Ranger and his grand-daughter and grand-son) had been edited out. This editing left me very disappointed. So, when I saw this DVD and read the comment in the reviews that noted the real life characters in the begining and the ending where included in this DVD I was excited and ordered the item right away. Yes, the real life actors are included as the other reviewer noted. However, it is extremly unfortunate that the transfer is indescribably bad. The frames jump as if you are watching an old film back in grade school. The sound is very scratchy. The colors fade from rich to dull and some scenes are even blurry. It is very difficult to watch the program because the transfer to DVD is so bad. My 1987 VHS and commerical tape that I have present a far greater quality picture/sound than this DVD. This story is an awesome story.... 5 stars. However, this transfer... this particular DVD stinks! Please, if you are looking for a good quality transfer of this great Christmas tale... don't buy this one. If you have not had the pleasure of viewing this wonderful story yet, this production will sour your experience. If you are looking to find that DVD of a wonderful childhood experience, this production will leave you disappointed. There are other DVD's of this Christmas classic. I guess we are all still looking for that awesome Santa and the three Bears DVD transfer that includes the real life actors. Until I find it, I'm still using the 'ol VHS version. Happy searching, but please... don't purchase this item. The poor quality of the transfer will leave you extremely disappointed. I find that other reviewers have offered their higher marks for this DVD because the story is such a great story. The story is great. But the presentation of that great story really stinks! Look to other DVD's of this story.

This Christmas special gets better and better with age!,
By AbeStreet (Mayfield Heights, OH United States) - See all my reviews

I remember watching this film as a child and thinking that it moved a bit slow, especially when compared to the Rankin & Bass Christmas specials. Unlike R & B specials it has no evil villain to fear or hero to cheer for. The songs were not as catchy either.
However, now as an adult I seem to enjoy the laid back simple story. The songs are good and I like the introduction and ending with live actors. I think what makes me appreciate this special even more are the so called Christmas specials that are produced today. I have children of my own now and neither they or I like what we see today. Thankfully they also like the Christmas specials I remember from my childhood. This Christmas special is not aired that often anymore and it seems to drift in and out of availability for DVD and VHS purchase. If you see that it is airing on television you may want to record it as it hard to come by these days.

This is my absolute favorite Christmas program. Until I found it on Amazon, I had spent many years searching for it since it rarely airs on television. Thanks to Amazon, it's once again a part of my holiday tradition.

Christmas--The way it should be,

I remember seeing Santa and the Three Bears on television a few years ago. I loved it!! It made me think of the old Christmas specials I used to watch as a child. Unfortunetly they took it off the air. I feel something is totally lacking in today's animated films and specials. This generation is too computerized and well...fake. This 1970 Christmas film takes you back and really does make you feel like you are in the Christmas sprit. It does that with the songs and plot of the story. That is why I am going to introduce my daughter to this film. I want her to feel the same feeling I had growing up watching wholesome/quality shows. This film really does show "the wonders of Christmas time".

Hanna-Barbera and Christmas!,

Santa and the Three Bears is a great little holiday special for young and old alike. I don't recall seeing this as a youngster, it wasn't until I was older that I stumbled across this one holiday season and was immediately captivated by the story. Now, I saw the film on commercial television, so it wasn't until I saw the Prism video release that I saw the live-action sequences to the story.Hal Smith and Jean Vader Pyl lend their voices to this animated classic and it's simply a fun holiday film. Find a copy, sit down with your children or grandchildren or even sneak it in the VCR when you're alone and be swept away by the endearing story. Have you ever known a Hanna-Barbera toon that doesn't captivate you? Add to their wonderful touch for animated magic, the holiday season and you have a recipe for wonderful entertainment!

Warm fuzzies,

This holiday special is like a cup of hot cocoa for my soul. I don't know why- I never even saw this movie when I was growing up, but discovered it in college when the Family Channel (pre-ABC) aired it during their 25 Days of Christmas. I fell in love with it though, and it's been a Christmas staple in my house ever since then. My tape is almost worn out as I've watched it every year now for almost ten years. My three-year-old daughter and I would put this tape in almost every night this Christmas season and fall asleep to it, not because it's boring, but because it is sooooo soothing! I have to agree with what one other reviewer said, that is reminds me of what Christmas meant to me as a young child. Watching this movie is always a treat for my inner child, and my actual child loves it too- something wonderful we can share together! My husband thinks we're both crazy, though. That "70's" quality only registers for him as tacky, tacky, tacky. Yes, it's tacky. But it sure does give me the warm fuzzies! Two funny "bloopers" I noticed in the movie:

Taken off the back of video: Two cute, wide-eyed Yellowstone National Park bear cubs, who put off hibernation to wait for a visit from Santa Claus, learn an important lesson about the meaning of the Christmas season from the park's friendly ranger. Video is in color and runs approximately 30 minutes.

This is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies. I'm so glad it's available to buy. My brother and I used to watch this movie everytime it aired during the Christmas season when we were kids and even as adults. I now have two kids of my own and I can't wait to let them watch this Christmas Classic. Truly a great family movie for all ages.
