Book Description

November 15, 2007
It's November up in the North Pole. Everything's going along smoothly at Santa's workshop until he discovers a leak in his roof. Santa soon learns that this little leak is connected to a far bigger problem. The North Pole is melting because of something called global warming! Faced with the reality of what this could mean for Christmas, not to mention the planet and the future, Santa is determined to turn things around. To do so, he calls upon the people he knows better than any other--the children. Much to Santa's joy, they respond in a way that makes all the difference...in the world.

Review

"A great story with a really important message for kids -- that they can do everything. I would give it 150 stars." --Paul G, 10 years old

About the Author

Victoria Perla was born and raised in New York City. After earning a B.S. in Marketing from St. John's University, she attended the School of Visual Arts for advertising. Her successful copywriting career took her to Lintas, New York, and J. Walter Thompson, where she worked on national brands including Cover Girl and Kodak and created the award-winning campaign, "Maybe She's Born With It, Maybe It's Maybelline." She's also worked on leading accounts such as Clairol, Schick, Weight Watchers, Sara Lee, AT&T, Procter & Gamble and Home Shopping Network. The mother of a 10-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter, Ms. Perla openly admits to being an idealist, which fuels her still-childlike excitement for the magic of Christmas. It's also inspired her thinking that Santa has the power to enlighten children's minds about climate change. "Children have a relationship with Santa unlike any other," she says. "They will listen and respond if they know he's in need. Becoming green--or at a minimum 'greener with each week'--is something we all must do," she believes. "More importantly, we must teach the up-and-coming generations to be aware of how they're caring for the planet. We must do anything we can to get them thinking in visionary ways." To paraphrase her book, lots of little things can make a world of difference.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent idea by a so-so story., December 29, 2007

This review is from: When Santa Turned Green (Hardcover)
This was a Christmas present for my daughter.

Basically, Christmas is on it's way and Santa gets hit with a dew drop on the nose. He investigates and finds the North Pole is melting. He checks the ice caps and finds they are melting. Santa then decides to find out why and becomes interested in CO2 emissions. He then goes about visiting the children to get them interested in solving the problem.

The author stated she set out to offer a tool to not scare children. But the story is a little weak and not written well as my daughter seems not to interested in it. Especially when there are things like a lady in pink blow snow and doves and I couldn't explain who she was.

Then there is the blasphemy that Santa would wear a green suit as he works towards educating the world of this problem. My girl says Santa only wears Red!

There are some suggestions for kids can do such as using reusable lunch packing versus the throw away, recycling, planting trees, etc. However, the schools and the girl scouts are giving these out anyway.

One thing to note is the author is donating some of the proceeds to charities that help the environment.

It's an ok book that could have been better.

2.0 out of 5 stars nice idea but unreadable ..., December 23, 2010

The idea might be good but I cannot read a word neither on a mobile nor on a Galaxy. The author should know more about the design on these new platform. Design matters if you cannot read the book with your kinds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, January 29, 2009
What a FANTASTIC way to teach kids about Global Warming!

Great pics - especially the page with all Santa's suits hanging in the closet - a ton of green ones and 1 red one.

Terrific tips for conserving energy and helping the planet.

We loaned ours around the neighbourhood and had kids write their comments in the cover.
