5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!
This is what happens when you get a collection of some of the world's best jazz musicians, very talented vocalists, and Carlos Santana on one stage together...just a spectacular performance!

Santana and his band are worth the price of admission alone but add Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin(Santana's mentor back in the 70's), Wayne Shorter, Ravi...

2.0 out of 5 stars Forget it if you are looking for classic Santana
I am not a jazz person, but I am a 50 year old head-banger that grew up on 70's rock.

If you like the jazz-phase of Santana, then I cannot comment. However if you were looking for "Evil Woman", "Oyo como va", etc. then you won't find it here. This is not classic Santana. That's what I wanted but this DVD does not deliver that.

Let me point...

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!, June 20, 2007
This review is from: Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
This is what happens when you get a collection of some of the world's best jazz musicians, very talented vocalists, and Carlos Santana on one stage together...just a spectacular performance!

Santana and his band are worth the price of admission alone but add Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin(Santana's mentor back in the 70's), Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane plus Stevie Winwood from Traffic fame, and a collection of wonderful female vocalists and you have one of the very best concert DVD's in a long time. The people attending this concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival saw a history making performance.

Add to this, the camera work was excellent and the sound spot-on. The selections of songs were very eclectic, with pices ranging from, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Harry Bellafonte, and of course Santana. Often, when you get too many front-line musicians on the stage together, it can sound like a train wreck but that never happens here. There seems to be a real sense of symbiosis, all the pieces fall together perfectly.

If you want to see Santana perform his more popular songs get, "Supernatural Live" or the "Santana Live By Request" DVD's.

However, if you want to see "real performers" performing at the highest level, playing songs that inspire them, while having a great time, get this DVD.

Just got my HD DVD version of this, it just came out. the other reveiwers are refering to the DVD version, which is the same sonically at least except for the DTS true HD sound track. Anyway this is an amazing line up for Carlos, everyones here Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane, John McLaughlin, Steve Winwood, Nile Rodgers, Omar Hakim, and of course Chester Thomson on drums. What an amazing line up. The video is clear and crisp in HD as it should be, The sound track I used DTS True HD fantastic what else can I say? If you have an HD DVD player and love music this is a MUST BUY! If I was not going to own it on HD DVD I would buy the DVD version. Great disc, great band, great guests ! BUY IT NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Santana Hymns, May 31, 2007
This review is from: Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
I have been waiting for this album since I read about Carlo's plans to release it shortly after "Supernatural" had hit it big.It has been years and worth every second of the wait.Santana brings his core new band and adds stellar players to the lineup recording songs that are meant to inspire the people of the world to change their reality to one of compassion for the one world.Carlo's shows he can outplay anyone, anytime, anywhere but he is so humble and concerned for the cause he complaments all of the other players.Imagine Carlos,Mahavishnu,Shorter,Coltrane,Corea,Hancock,Winwood and a host of other luminaries playing songs of love completly in the zone.Carlos and Herbie Hancock are particularly outstanding.I consider this double DVD set the finest music video that has yet been created.Mandatory purchase for everybody in the world.

Let me point anyone who has a nice hi-def setup and is into classic rock to Heart - Live in Seattle and The Eagles Farewell Tour #1, both 5 star HD productions...and the artists are true to their roots and are perfect and professional.

I purchased this DVD and when I tried to play it, it would not load on three machines: two DVD players and one computer. I returned it and received the replacement. The exact same thing happened. I got a refund from Amazon.
I wonder if all the copies fail to work.

1.0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed, April 30, 2008

This review is from: Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
I'm s big Santana fan who was expecting a bit more Santana. The track listing was initially intriguing to me; how would Carlos Santana interpret the banana boat song? He didn't. While the musicians were mostly "on," the vocal performances were flat and on more than one occasion I had to skip to the "NEXT" track. Even drummer Dennis Chambers looked bored at times, while Carlos roamed the stage like a party host looking for a place to be useful.

The list of performers is long and impressive but the performances were boring and without Santana's groove. Very, very dissapointing.
