Humility never was one of Santa's more notable attributes (who has time to be humble with responsibilities like his?), but the jolly old fellow is as susceptible to self-doubt as the next guy, as
Santa'a Special Delivery exposes. The video, one of a new breed of holiday titles hung up on wagging a finger at the hurried and often inhospitable world we inhabit, centers around Santa's increasing insignificance; boys and girls no longer can be bothered to write hopeful letters to a ho-ho-ho-ing phony. One little girl, Jasmine, is among a handful of holdout believers, to the chagrin of her computer-whiz brother Leon. After a chance encounter with Santa in which he's heckled by cynical humbugs, she aims to convince him and her self-involved parents, who've "penciled in" a call to the kids on Christmas morning, that the holiday spirit is badly in need of salvaging. That's when serendipity strikes: the personal organizer Santa's elves give him for Christmas malfunctions, mangling his present-delivery list. To fix it, he seeks out the snarly but brilliant Leon, who changes his Grinch-like tune once Father Christmas finds a magical way to make his secret wish--that his parents would come home for Christmas--come true.
Special Delivery's simplicity suits children 2 to 8, but older kids may be lured by its freshness. Santa as mere mortal may not be a spellbinding concept, but at least it's something new.
