Editorial Reviews

Alan Ladd delivers the goods in an explosive tale of revolution and greed, directed by action ace Gordon Douglas. Desperate for arms in their fight against Spain, Cuban partisans agree to double the price if American gunrunner Cash Adams (Ladd) smuggles a boatload of weapons to their Santiago hideout. Forced into an uneasy alliance with an old enemy (Lloyd Nolan) and a sexy freedom fighter (Helen of Troy's Rossana Podesta), Adams must battle his way through naval blockades, dense jungles and heavily guarded passes to convey the munitions to a remote mountain outpost where the rebels and payment await. Shot on a specially-built jungle set still in use today (currently the site of True Blood's Merlotte's Bar & Grill), Santiago is Ladd at his two-fisted best: cynical, cool and tough as nails.

Saw this movie several times in 1956 when it was first released. I am glad to see it finally has been released on DVD. Alan Ladd plays an ex-army West Point graduate who was dishonorably discharged along with his sergeant, played by Paul Fix. Now he has become a gun runner interested only in money and whichever side can pay the most. The year is 1898 and he is running guns to the Cuban rebels who are fighting the Spanish for their independence. He really doesn't care who wins or loses as long as he gets paid. But He is slowly drawn into the Cuban cause by fiery Rossana Podesta, and her little brother Juanito, who looks up to Ladd as a soldier. Plenty of action and a great cast with Lloyd Nolan (As a slimy heavy), Chill WIlls, L.Q. Jones (in a very early role), Royal Dano. Highly recommended.

This was an interesting movie. I have always enjoyed Alan Ladd but he is also teamed up with another giant of the film screen ... Lloyd Nolan. They play off each other great. Rossana Podestra was beautiful and played a courageous role. The colors are excellent and the overall theme is believable.

I remember this from my childhood. I was thrilled to see it finally available from Amazon. It has a great story line with Alan Ladd acting as a gun runner with an old steamboat. As he runs it from Florida, he encounters the Cuban Patriot Rosanna Podesta. Will they get the Guns to Cuba? Enjoy this movie!
