From the Inside Flap

Architectural Monographs No 16 Santiago Calatrava Architecture and engineering throughout the world have been brought closer together and inspired by the work of the Spanish-born architect and engineer, Santiago Calatrava. Calatrava studied both architecture and civil engineering before setting up his dual-disciplinary practice in Zurich in 1981. His distinctive designs are generated by an inquisitive and innovative approach to structure and form. He is fascinated by structure in nature, and with the inherent movement of natural forms. Calatrava has observed that 'engineering is the art of the possible': the ideas behind his buildings and bridges are often developed from experimental sculptures addressing balance, tension and motion. This monograph includes an interview with Calatrava and looks at a selection of twenty-one projects from the early eighties to works currently on site, illustrated with photographs and construction drawings. Illustrated essays by Dennis Sharp and Anthony Tischhauser explore Calatrava's working methods and his theoretical preoccupations - tracing the development of Calatrava's unique design language from his initial investigations into folding mechanisms to the present day. The highly successful Architectural Monographs series focuses on individuals of international stature who have been influential in practice and in education. Each monograph is designed to reflect the style of the architect featured, providing an invaluable record of the work and an important source book for further study. Monographs in print include: Alvar Aalto - Edwin Lutyens - Mies van der Rohe John Soane - Richard Rogers - Terry Farrell Daniel Libeskind - Ahrends, Burton and Koralek Tadao Ando - Le Corbusier - Frank Lloyd Wright Hassan Fathy - Robert AM Stern - CFA Voysey Foster Associates - Venturi Scott Brown - Rob Krier Lebbeus Woods - Morphosis - Demetri Porphyrios Peter Pran of Ellerbe Becket - Stirling + Wilford Peter Cook - Eric Owen Moss - Quinlan Terry William Alsop and Jan St?rmer - Itsuko Hasegawa Franklin D Israel - Panos Koulermos Recent Monographs: Miguel Angel Roca No 36 Tom?s Taveira No 37 Ron Herron No 38 Allan Greenberg No 39 Enric Miralles No 40 Toyo Ito No 41 Minoru Takeyama No 42 Derek Walker No 43 Philip Johnson No 44 Carlo Aymonino No 45
