Book Description

October 16, 2007
“The definitive study of the great Spanish architect whose soaring work is allabout openness, energy and aspiration.” –Met Home Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava has achieved considerable international acclaim with his breathtaking feats of architecture and engineering in the service of elegant and humanistic modern forms. This updated volume comprehensively examines this contemporary master’s career, including the architect’s furniture designs, sculpture, and drawings. His spectacular cultural and civic projects have secured Calatrava’s place in the pantheon of world-class 21st-century architects. Among these are the Athens Olympics Sports Complex; the Tenerife Concert Hall in the Spanish Canary Islands; the Valencia Science Museum, Planetarium, and Opera House, and the much-anticipated World Trade Center Transportation Hub. This newest edition introduces Calatrava’s latest triumphs, including the expressive Turning Torso tower in Sweden and the Chicago Tower, the tallest skyscraper in the US when built. A catalogue raisonne, detailed biography, and bibliography complete this comprehensive monograph.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Santiago Calatrava is dramatic both in designs and his public persona. In 2004 he captured the spotlight at the unveiling ceremont for his design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. On a whim Calatrava got up and sketched the building, with a giant bird stretching its wing above it, for the audience to see. This latest volume on the great architect reveals a lot about his process and the inspiration behind his work. For example, his affinity for drawing the human form and winged creatures, which inspired his entry for the Church of the Year 2000 competition in Rome, which he didn't win. Of course, there are alsohis many successes, like the Puente de la Mujer (Bridge of the Woman) in Buenos Aires and the New York Times Capsule, a time capsule on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The book also previews some unfinished projects, so look out for the Chicago Spire tower and Governor's Island Gondola in New York City. Hardcover, Rizzoli, $85 -- Florida Inside Out Sept/Oct 2007

The product arrived even before the timeframe they provided me at the time of purchase. As I wanted it as a gift, I bought it with enough time to arrive, but I was gladly surprised to see it arrived early.
