Make sure you keep the instruction manual close by! You CANNOT just figure this thing out without the manual..there are too many variances involved, and absolutely no labeling. If someone else decides they want to use it, they will probably end up asking you how (why not just cook it yourself...ugh) The other problem: If you are using it as a toaster oven, forget pizza,...

This microwave/toaster is great, but initially, people are going to complain about the toaster.
The heating element is on the roof of the oven, towards the back. To toast whatever you're toasting, Sanyo has you place an included metal grate on the rotating glass turntable to prop your toast thing upon. The grate is on legs, to raise the future toast towards the heat. Unless you're using Sanyo brand bread which must be 6 inches thick per slice, the set-up leaves you tooooo far away from the element. Here's the remedy.
Pull the glass turntable out. Place the metal grate on something about two inches high like a bowl turned upside down or bricks. You can also tape trimmed chop sticks to each leg for a more streamlined innovation.
Put your wanna-be toast on the grate towards the back of the oven and turn the thing on. Setting fire to four fish sticks on an eight minute setting, prompted me to write this review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best at everything but great for what it is, September 29, 2004

Lets face fact if you look at triathelete that person is not going to be the best at each of the disciplines but combined together then that person works out greater then the sum of their parts. Same thing with this. Not the best griller, microwave aint bad and the same for the toaster. But when you put together the sum of all its parts it is a great appliance in that it saves me having 3 appliances on my counter and does everything that it says it does just takes a little longer then an appliance built strictly for it

You must use it to beleive it. Great product. Replaced my big old oven and big toaster. This oven does it all. Makes great toast with butter and cheeze on it. Price great, would have paid more for such a great microwave and toaster. Thank you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough microwave...not a very good toaster or combo, June 3, 2006

Make sure you keep the instruction manual close by! You CANNOT just figure this thing out without the manual..there are too many variances involved, and absolutely no labeling. If someone else decides they want to use it, they will probably end up asking you how (why not just cook it yourself...ugh) The other problem: If you are using it as a toaster oven, forget pizza, or anything that you would like toasted/cooked on the bottom as well, it doesn't have the capability. The oven has a child lock out option-although I think they could just as easily "accidentally" turn off the lock out:( This microwave grill/combo is fine for the occasional user, to heat up food, cook a couple of potatoes or to pop a bag of popcorn. The other reviewer was right though, be careful of times, cooks fast for me too.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a microwave ONLY, Don't buy, March 8, 2006

This review is from: Sanyo EM-Z2100GS Microwave Oven with Built-In Grill, Black and Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This oven looks great, is a little big. It has to be dialed for the times, you can't just punch in 3min 30 seconds. Not the worst thing. The worst is it's only a microwave. The "toaster" is a joke. It's the same thing as the "oven" with a wire rack. A broiler element comes on from the inside top and within 3 minutes will turn your slices of bread to hardened bricks. The bread is not edible. It's as if you'd microwaved it and then tried to dry it out in an oven overnight. The "oven" is the same broiler element only and will also ruin any dinner rolls you might have put in a small toaster oven. I didn't want to pay to send it back, but should have! I ended up having to buy a small toaster oven from Target to do the two jobs I was told this one would do. I could have bought a nice looking, well made microwave for a lot less money and the same toaster oven. Big mistake. Live and learn. Don't buy the combo machines, they can't do it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars best freaken microwave ever, August 2, 2007
This review is from: Sanyo EM-Z2100GS Microwave Oven with Built-In Grill, Black and Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
ive never written a review before, for anything, ever. this microwave is worth it though.
before i bought this microwave i was looking through reviews on this page and almost ended up not buying it because i read a couple negative reviews. i even bought a panasonic microwave first, fortunately i hated the panasonic, everything cooked too fast and unevenly. i then returned it to my local blue n yellow and got this in its place.
best microwave ive ever owned. it may be a little slower than other microwaves out there but you eventually get a feel for how it cooks and things come out nice. the really great thing is the built in toasting element. not so much for the stand alone toasting which takes a bit longer than a conventional toaster but the results are just as good. it comes with a mteal grill stnad that you put ontop of the glass revolving table. ive found that without the "grill" you cann keep food warm using turns bread to toast in under 5 minutes. where the toasting element i think really shines is the combo buttons. 1 button give you a mix of 30%microwaving 70%"grill" the
my general rule is for cold or room temp food that you want reheated but don't want to loose as much of the crispiness that it had when it was fresh. use combo 1, this wont make miracles. sorry. but it does do a much better job a keeping things crispy than a standard microwave. i like it for left out pizza. frozen chimichangas or burritos are better when the tortilla isn't steamed from constant microwaving.
combo number 2 is 60% microwave and 40% "grill" i like using it mostly for frozen things.
the stainless interior is easy to clean and looks fancy.
the control scheme is a bit foreign but after you have used it a while you become familiar with it and end up liking it. it makes it easier to add or take away time as the food is cooking, and reminds me of those old analog kitchen timers/egg timers.
i do think thats its lame that for the preset cooking time for items(like popcorn) arent labeled as the foods you would cook rather they are labeled A1 through A9. there is a chart inside the door which tells you what they all mean but it really would have been nice if i didn't have to do that.
oh and the popcorn setting doesn't work out well for me.
that is all.
im happy with my purchase and recommends it. my friend bought one recently based on my recommendations and he is also very happy with it. that could be you!

2.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat the laws of physics -- bought and returned, September 11, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sanyo EM-Z2100GS Microwave Oven with Built-In Grill, Black and Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
When I saw the combo microwave/toaster over thought that it was too good to be true. With a kitchen that always has one too many appliances on the counter, and with an aging microwave that should be moved to the office I was really looking forward to the product.

There were two problems that made me send it back before trying it out: the size and no toast.

Apparently because of the heat generated in grill mode the unit needs from 2 inches (side) to 8 inches (top) of clearance and that meant I could not find a place in my kitchen for it.

Also, the grill seems more a grill than a toaster; I actually use a toaster over for toast and it doesn't seem designed for such purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars This thing does it all, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Sanyo EM-Z2100GS Microwave Oven with Built-In Grill, Black and Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This is a great oven. Not only is it a great microwave, it has a quartz electric broiler unit in the top (I don't know how they do that) that acts like a broiler unit in a toaster oven. It is not equal to a true convection combo, but for $120, this thing will brown your toast like a toaster over, and defrost frozen foods, plus it even gives you 2 combo modes. I highly recommend this oven. It's the best microwave I ever bought.
