better grill than its big 200 square inch brother,
By
This review is from: Sanyo HPS-SG2 Indoor Barbeque Grill with 120-Square-Inch Nonstick Cooking Surface (Kitchen)
I have the larger Sanyo electric grill and it is great, just a little too big for my kitchen counter. (it is out in my RV, working great) But this baby is just right for my kitchen. It has a little less wattage than the bigger model but actually seems to heat up a little faster. I like the design of the grilling surface better than the design of the bigger unit (deeper grooves, and a good lip around the edge). I like the water tray that is black instead of aluminum in color, and it is easier to remove and pour the little amount of water out (1/2 cup of water is used to keep the smoke down). My cooking routine is to set it up, pour a 1/2 cup water into the tray, spray a little canola oil on the grill, turn the control up to high to pre-heat for about 3 minutes, then slap the seasoned steak, burger, chicken, ribs, etc. on the grill. I sear in some good grill marks on each side, then turn the heat down to medium and finish cooking at a slower pace, depending upon thickness of the piece being cooked. My first try was a T-Bone steak, and it was great! After the food is done, I turn the heat control off. For cleanup, I place a couple of dripping wet paper towels on the grill surface, turn the heat control back to high for a minute or so. When the steam starts rising of the wet towels, I shut of the power, and just wipe down the grill with those same paper towels, then dry, it cleans very easily. Nothing is quite like the burning and flames of a good charcole fire, but indoors or out, this cooks very, very well, with bare minumum of effort. I do recommend aluminum foil to cover the grill and the food to speed pre-heating and to keep splatters down. I think I may get some disposable shallow metal foil trays that match the grill size, to use as lids, they look like they should work well.

At 120 square inches, we wondered if the larger, 200 inch model might make more sense. But we're two people and rarely serve guests; so, the size and energy savings are perfect. We loved the grill we wore out before we ordered this, but this has a lighter weight cook surface, which makes for faster heating (more energy savings! :-)) and easier handling for cleaning. The non-stick surface is gr8 - washes up easily; whereas, we used our pressure washer on our last grill. We like the removable drip pan, which is easy to wrap in foil to avoid that nasty cleaning job. We did not believe that we could possibly like anything as well as our previous unit, but we like this grill sooooo much better that we don't even remember who manufactured the last one. We hope this lasts as long!

Sanyo Grill,

This grill is truly smokeless and very easy to clean as advertised. Cooks a little slower then an outdoor grill and doesn't give you that true grill taste, but is still a wonderful addition to my kitchen. Would highly recommend.

My husband ordered me this grill for Christmas after I saw it on America's Test Kitchen. For $40 I didn't expect alot. It is easy to assemble and disassemble for cleaning, heats up quickly and has minimal smoke. I put the drip pan in the dishwasher and spray the cook top off in the sink and use a little scrub brush. I can get it clean in a couple of minutes, but I will try the paper towel trick. I keep mine next to the stove so I can turn the exhaust fan on when I cook. So far, I have grilled chicken, shrimp and pork chops. Another review was correct in that it isn't exactly a true grilled flavor, but still does a good job especially on the shrimp. My goal it to lose a little weight and thought an indoor grill would help me cut down on oil and keep my husband from complaining about "bland food". I do wish it had a lid, but will try using those disposable aluminum pans. Overall, it was better than I expected.

Great indoor grill!,

I use this grill very often. It heats up quickly. This grill cooks the food cleanly, cooking away all fat, so there is little mess and clean-up. I only cook for myself, but it is definitely large enough to cook for two or three. The only reason I have given it 4 stars, rather than 5, is because, if you like your food well-done, as I do, you will definitely have smoke. It needs to be placed near an open window for ventilation. I love this grill and I am glad I purchased it!

Fills The Need To Grill,

For years I've been cooking outdoors. When weather does not permit lighting off the outdoor grill its good to have other options. I've used several of the so-called indoor grills a time or two. Everything from the high ticket models on down to the cheapies, we gave them a serious test run. Needless to say, they did nothing for me and soon found a place on the shelf of the local thrift store. Surprisingly, the Sanyo HPS/SG2 Smokeless Grill has changed our minds about indoor grilling.Powered by an 850 Watt heating element and with an easy to use adjustable temperature control, this little kitchen gadget is simple to operate. The grill plate rests on a plastic frame. The aluminum drip pan fits inside and on the bottom of the frame. The unit is also equipped with two cool to the touch handles. Clean up is a breeze. The grill plate must be hand washed. It is not submersible. Even though we've not done it, the drip tray is machine washable. As with any new cooking device, there is a slight odor when warming up. This is primarily caused by the newness of the product. It goes away. I suggest cleaning the unit before use Weighing in at 4.6 lbs and measuring at a little over 18" x 13" x 3" inches, its perfect for counter tops. To keep food from sticking I coated the grill plate with a non stick spray. I maxed out the grilling area and cooked four 6oz. burgers in no time. I found that no matter what percentage of fat is in the burgers, excessive smoking will occur. To cut down on that I covered the burgers with a lid and operated the grill next to an open window. I've also had great success in grilling boneless chicken breasts and steaks too. Again I used a pot lid to speed up the cooking times on larger items such as the chicken breasts. Even the familiar grilling stripes of meats and vegetables are there. The non-stick grid surprisingly does a great job of allowing fat to drain down into the drip pan. To keep smoke down, just fill the aluminum drip pan with water. Even while doing this, I strongly suggest using this grill in a well ventilated area. If there is a weakness to this product, its the plastic frame. It hasn't been done yet, but one drop of the frame and its no more grilling. Its also a good idea to keep an eye on the handles. The mounting hardware is sure to work itself free over time. The coated drip tray could be an issue as well. I'm not sure why the manufacturer opted for not using a non stick coating on the aluminum pan. A lid would have been an ideal accessory for this product as well. Other then those possible problem areas, its a good working product. The Sanyo HPS/S2 Smokeless Grill comes packaged with the grill grid, drip pan, frame, power cord, instructions, and a one year limited warranty. A couple of good recipes are posted in the instruction booklet. When those rainy days do bring us inside, the Sanyo HPS/S2 Grill has surprisingly been a reliable go to kitchen appliance. With the exception of the problems areas that I mentioned earlier, this grill has been a workhorse for us. I'd recommend it to anyone that feels the need to grill.

Not as good as my Contempra Char-B-Que, but not bad,

After 20 years, my old Contempra Char-B-Que gave up the ghost. I tried the George Forman grill, but absolutely hated it, since it was a nightmare to clean and had no temperature control. Since NOBODY makes an open-element indoor grill any more, I decided to try the Sanyo. It's element is encased in it's aluminum grill, but there are plenty of holes for the grease to drip through into the metal tray below. You put about 1/4" of water in the tray before cooking and the tray practially rinses clean. The grill itself has a non-stick coating which makes cleaning fairly easy. I use a vegetable brush under running hot water to get all the real gnarly stuff off, then wipe it down with a soapy sponge to clean the rest. Although I can't find any warnings on it that say "Do not immerse in water", I decided not to, just to be safe. The grill has a temperature control which enables you to adjust the heat level for different types of foods. The only problem is that the scale is not linear. While there's plenty of adjustment at the lower temperatures, there is only about 1/4" of adjustment left between 300 and 425 degrees. It's kind of tricky to dial in 350 degrees within such little space, but you get used to it. The little light goes off when grill reaches the selected temperature, which is nice. The grill comes with a fairly decent instruction manual, which gives some guidelines for time and temperatures for some different foods. So far, it seems fairly accurate. The size is perfect for one to 3 people. The heat seems even all the way to the edges, so you could really load it up if you wanted to. I'm concerned just how long the non-stick coating will last, but other than that, it's a pretty neat grill for the price.

I got this as a Christmas present and was skeptical at first as to how well my steaks would come out, but guess what, they were pretty darn good! I love to grill outside on my deck in the summer, but this a good choice for indoor winter grilling. My steaks came out juicy and with grill marks, (alas without the nice char from outside grill) but good none the less. While not completely smokeless, there's a lot less smoke than broiling or pan frying. Cleanup is simple & easy. Thank you Santa!

I've used this twice and it seems to work as advertised. If you cook at a fairly high tempature,it will leave nice grill marks. Heats and cleans up fairly well-

Sorry but I cannot recommend this product. After following all instructions on the user manual here is my review: 1) The performance was not as great as I expected after reading the positive reviews. 2) Don't bother with the smokeless ad. This is not true, there was a lot of smoke in my kitchen, I had to open the doors so the fire alarm wouldn't go off. 3) product cheaply made and only worked twice. The third time everything looked like it was working ie power light was on however in the middle of grilling it stopped working...next thing I knew my food was growing colder every time I took the int temp reading. I then touched the grill plate and it was cold. I called Sanyo and although it will be covered under warranty they want me to pay for S&H ( which I guess is expected)...I am not going to bother to send product back to Sanyo as at the end of the day everything will cost equivalent to purchasing this again and since it wasn't good to begin with then I'll just count it as a loss. Get the cast iron grills they are ok. Not great either but ok... I guess nothing beats an outdoor grill. |
