I really like this grill. I found it to be particulary good for searing fish and really like the smoke free feature. I was a little skeptical of the smoke free feature however it really does do a good job of cooking with little-to-no smoke. 1.0 out of 5 stars Meh - works alright
I thought this would be easier than using a traditional outdoor bbq, but it really isn't. The base is flimsy and plastic and it takes up more space on the counter than I thought it would. Grills things fairly nicely but I have only used it about 5 times and already the non-stick is wearing off and food sticks to it even when I use non stick spray. The worst part is...

I really like this grill. I found it to be particulary good for searing fish and really like the smoke free feature. I was a little skeptical of the smoke free feature however it really does do a good job of cooking with little-to-no smoke. I really found the griddle to be very useful as I love sauteed mushrooms on burgers and the griddle and grill together are quite conducive for this type of cooking. Having one place to grill and griddle is very handy for eggs and sausage or bacon for breakfast too. For someone who lives in an apartment wihout an outdoor area for barbequeing (like myself) this is a great alternative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great grill, October 16, 2009

I received this grill a few days ago and have used it twice.
The first night I grilled porterhouse steaks and they came out beautifully. The nice feature of the grill is the temperature control; you can sear a steak at 400 degrees and then turn the temperature down. Really makes a difference; steaks were tender and juicy.
Next I tried burgers. Came out great. Cooked them well done and they were still flavorful and juicy cooking at 325 degrees.
I previously had a George Forman and this grill is far better. In my opinion the problem with the Forman is that everything is cooked very quickly at 400 degrees; meat was often dry because of this. This grill is not as fast as a Forman but it is definately worth the wait. I think I'm going to use this a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars They weren't kidding when they said "Extra Large" !, February 10, 2010

It's a little premature; I just got my grill today and I only used it once. BUT - I was so excited that I just couldn't wait to post my review.

When I opened the door for the UPS man I was surprised - the box was huge! I figured Amazon just over packaged it. When I opened the box, I was again surprised - the grill box was just as big as the outer box!

I wiped it off, set it up and started cooking right away. I cooked 5 hand-sized thin steaks at a time and steamed an entire bag of frozen veggies in the griddle part with the lid on. You can really fit a lot of food on it! It cooked evenly, didn't burn, and it's so nice that all the fat drips off to the "drip pan". It even put grill marks on the food!

Clean up was OK...the lid washed off nicely, as did the drip pan, but the grill was a little tricky. I didn't want to damage the heating element so it was kind of awkward because I scrubbed it with one hand and held it up on the counter at an angle towards the sink with the other. It would be comforting to know that the element was immersible like my electric skillet...but thanks to the size and even heating, as well as containing the mess to it's grill and drip pans, overall I am so far extremely satisfied with the product.

I have owned several indoor grills. From George Foreman to Hamilton Beach. This Sanyo is far better than either of them. It's large grilling surface is great for my hubby and me. I love the griddle with the lid for steaming veggies, or frying onions to go with the steaks I'm grilling. Cleanup is easy but some care must be taken. The grill is not immersible so what I do is lean it on the side of the sink with plug side up. I love that the grill is non stick on both sides for easy cleanup. And adding water to the base pan makes it nearly smoke free. Little to none. The only negative, like I said, is that it's not totally immersible. I still rate it 5 stars for a superior indoor grill.

I bought one of these as a gift for a friend and one for myself (Dec 2009) I have only used mine 5 or 6 times.

This is what I sent my friend last night:

"I'm glad you enjoyed the barbecued chicken. If you'd like to try the recipe, I took very fresh Draper Valley Farms: boneless, skinless, chicken thighs (small and tender) wiped them dry, cut off any obvious fat, put them in a ziplock freezer bag with some excellent Hawaiian BBQ sauce, squished it around to coat all the chicken, then folded the top over to get all the air out, and "ziplocked" it. I put it in the fridge for about 24 hours and cooked it on the indoor barbecue.

It's important to follow the instructions that come with the BBQ: fill the drip pan about 1/2 way with water, use PAM fat-free spray for barbecuing on the grill.. heat the grill to only about 200-225F (till it sizzles) and slowly cook the thighs, turning them several times with tongs, for about 25 minutes.. until all pink is gone from the meat, but remove while the meat is still very juicy. I've found using a higher temperature tends to burn the marinade and dry out the meat.. so I slow cook things. It's a way to get very tasty meat without any added fat... or going outside in inclement weather."

That said, I put the lower drip pan in the dishwasher for the 3rd time last night.. I usually hand-wash it, but the instructions DO say it is dishwasher safe. That is not true! After 3 times in the dishwasher, the very thin finish on the "drip pan" is seriously damaged, even rusting in several places.

It's a great idea, fairly easy to clean, can produce wonderful indoor barbecued meats and veggies right in your kitchen (if you're careful about the temperature) but they need a much better surface on the drip pan! I haven't used the cover, but I suspect the finish on that would not hold up in the dishwasher, either.

A major improvement over the Gorge Foreman grill I had previously! But obviously not quite like being outdoors, still a great alternative for places like Seattle!

The worst part is trying to clean it. You have to sort of angle it in the sink to avoid getting the side with the plug in wet, and now that the non stick is worn off food really, REALLY sticks and it's hard to get it off the grill. Would not buy this again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suprising great indoor grill, October 28, 2010

I ordered this grill because it had great reviews and I would not disagree with others. This is a great indoor grill. I have never been one to grill in the past because I always felt it was too much trouble but this makes it extremely easy. The one surprise I had when I received it, was that it is very large. I was thinking a smaller grill but this was my mistake on not reading the description fully. However a lot of times I need to see something to truly visualize it. This does take up a lot of counter space but I think it is worth it. I put it away after grilling and the clean up is extremely easy. I also like the covered part of the grill. This works great for vegetables or the best sweet potato fries ever.

I would highly recommend this grill.

4.0 out of 5 stars For an indoor grill, this is tops!, February 1, 2010

This review is from: Sanyo HPS-SG4 Extra-Large Indoor Barbecue Grill and Griddle (Kitchen)
I've had all the other indoor grills and they were all flash in the pans...I'd use them for a little bit and then they went into storage because they were too hard to clean, didn't cook the way I wanted, smoked too much, etc...
This is amazing. The drip pan catches everything, and having water in it keeps it from smoking too much--it does smoke, despite what they may claim...just not alot.
The cooking surface is excellent. It gives off an even heat that cooks foods very nicely. Burgers turn out super! It cooks both sides, through to the middle, without making them chewy or hard.
The one thing is you're supposed to wait until the light goes out to show that it's fully heated and ready to cook....that seems to never happen. Same for everyone else I know who owns one...that light seems to never go out. When the grill has warmed up a while and seems pretty hot, we all just start grilling...You could wait forever for the light to go out--I don't think it ever does.
The food turns out great though, so I highly recommend this grill. Plus cleanup is not too bad. The drip pan just wipes out, and the grill can be washed in warm, sudsy water (minus the power control thingy). It scrubs up pretty quick and easily...way better than my other indoor grills.
And the price is pretty great! Definitely good for indoor grilling when the weather up north here is below freezing!
