Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Offering a seductive, sophisticated look, the svelte, affordable Sanyo Katana LX has an elegant mirrored finish with a translucent OLED display glowing through to subtly show the time or incoming caller ID. In addition to Sprint Vision services for surfing the Web and downloading email, you'll also enjoy GPS navigation capabilities for accessing the optional Sprint Navigation turn-by-turn direction service. Other features include a VGA camera for capturing still images, Bluetooth connectivity for handsfree devices and using your phone as a modem (optional service required), access to personal email and instant messaging services, and up to 4.8 hours of talk time.

The unique external OLED LCD display glows through the mirrored-finish, completely disappearing when not in use.
Sprint Service
This GPS-enabled phone provides optional access to Sprint Navigation for driving directions on your mobile phone--by voice and onscreen. Along the way, turn-by-turn directions will be announced in a clear voice and displayed on your phone. For example, Sprint Navigation will say, "Go 1.2 miles and turn right on Elm Street." As you approach the turn, you will hear, "Turn right on Elm Street." Sprint Navigation also provides proactive traffic alerts with one click re-routing. And it's easy to find restaurants, banks, cafes, hotels and more from over 10 million points of interest across the U.S.

Sprint Vision provides innovative wireless services like web access and email and text messaging capabilities. Plus, with the Sprint National Network, you get the nationwide coverage and excellent voice clarity. The Restrict and Lock function allows the user to restrict calls and limit access to Vision services--valuable for parents or business managers. For instance, you can restrict incoming and outgoing calls to only those numbers held in the internal phonebook, lock the camera and any pictures saved in the phone, and provides up to three "special numbers" that are always available.

Phone Features
Curvier with rounder edges than the other models in Sanyo's Katana line, the Katana LX is highlighted by the unique external OLED display that glows through the mirrored-finish and completely disappears when not in use. It displays current time/date, signal strength and battery life--but not caller ID--and it also provides whimsical, short animation clips for added fun. The internal 2-inch display has a 128 x 160-pixel resolution and 65K color depth. Below the screen you'll find a circular five-way navigation pad that's complemented by a round frame of buttons, including a dedicated camera key, back button, and two soft navigation keys. The send/end and dedicated speakerphone keys reside between the navigation area and and the alpha-numeric keypad.

The phone has a small 7 MB internal memory, which cannot be expanded. The phonebook provides a total of 300 contact entries, with the capability of saving up to 500 total phone numbers and 600 email and 300 Web addresses. Other features include a speed dial list of up to 98 numbers and a call history of the most recent 60 outgoing/received/missed calls.

Handsfree communication is easy thanks to the integrated speakerphone. This phone also provides Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and file transfer. You can connect your laptop via Bluetooth and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server (requires Phone As Modem Service Plan).

The VGA camera can capture still images up to 640 x 480 pixels (with additional resolution options for 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 pixels), but it does not record video clips. Other camera features include a digital zoom of up to 16x, three quality settings, five picture modes (Normal, Beach/Snow, Scenery, Night/Dark, Soft Focus), brightness controls, multi-shot capabilities, multiple shutter sounds (including silent mode), and a self-timer. Once a picture is snapped, you can snazz it up with a variety of fun frames and play with the color tone.

Other features include:

  • Wireless Backup to manage contacts list in the event that the phone is lost, stolen or damaged
  • Text and SMS Voice Messaging: Instantly send and receive SMS Text Messages across the room or across the country, anywhere in the Sprint National Network. Send voice messages to any mobile phone or email address. Just select a recipient, record a message and send.
  • Voice-Activated Dialing: Say the name of the person you want to call, and the phone dials the number automatically.
  • T9 predictive text input makes it simpler to send messages
  • Voice Memo/Recorder: Record and store as many as 100 different voice memos, each up to 3 minutes in length, for playback anytime.
  • Customizable Favorites Menu: Personalize your phone based on the applications most frequently used; assign favorite device activities to the corresponding menu numbers for quick access.
  • WAP 2.0 web browser
  • Instant messaging and Web-based email capabilities, including AOL, Windows Live, and PCS Mail
  • Call screening (pre-recorded or custom 12-second announcement)
  • Bilingual user interface (English and Spanish)
  • 72-chord polyphonic ringtones and vibrating alert
  • Organization and productivity tools: Alarm clock, world clock, stopwatch, countdown timer, calculator
  • Hearing Aid Compatible (HAC) rating of M4/T4.
  • Bluetooth version 2.0 with the following profiles: HFP (hands-free car kits), HSP (communication headsets), DUN (dial-up networking), OPP (object push for business cards, calendar items, and pictures), PBA (transfer contacts), SPP (serial port profile)

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing for the price, not perfect though, December 18, 2008

The Katana LX is a marked improvement in design if you compare it to the older phones. This phone has a memory card slot but you'll have to buy your memory. The interface is fast and the graphics are sufficient. It comes with the basic features most phones offer nowadays - loud speaker, bluetooth, mp3 player, media card slot, camcorder, 1.3 megapixel camera. Added features include a very nice display on the outside which looks very well illuminated. The phone doesn't come with any usb cable or headset, you have to buy your own 2.5mm headets. A surprise feature in all Sanyo phones is the inclusion of the ability to send phone numbers via bluetooth. You can send all your contacts using the bluetooth, this can be a demerit if someone doesn't want their contacts to be at everyone's disposal.

Good phone for the price. However one thing doesn't charm me. The cover is very easily scratched on the outside and when you hold the phone it can sometimes feel a little toy-like. If you're lookin for a better phone with a better build quality and some more features, go for the katana eclipse.

The LX 3800 phone comes in black, blue and pink. Girls, you will love the pink. Men, try the Eclipse black. The phone is compatible with all the Sprint plans and can be set up within minutes at a store for an upgrade or new contract.

2.0 out of 5 stars Basic features work well, but has some serious flaws, March 24, 2010
By
I got this because it was one of the cheapest phones that Sprint had at the time and it seemed to offer all the features I needed.

The good:
- Long battery life, I can usually go 2-3 days between plugging it in.
- Compact size, fits comfortably in my pocket
- Works well as a phone, good sound quality, good reception
- Nice clean easy to use button layout

The bad:
- This phone pocket dials ALL THE TIME. Since it's a flip phone this should not be a problem, but squeeze it the right way, usually when I'm carrying something heavy or trying to get something out of my pocket while sitting in a car and it dials the last used number on speaker phone.

- The OLED screen on the outside got a line through it 3 days after I got it. Unfortunately it was 2 days after the 1 month warranty before I made it to the service center so I have lived with that defect for 2 years so far.

- The T9 dictionary is limited in size and I filled it quickly with words I added.

- The camera is garbage, 640x480, produces blurry washed out images that are nearly useless. Using the camera also drastically reduces battery life and occasionally it takes pocket pictures, I go to use my phone and find the battery dead and the memory full of black pictures.

- Tiny, non-expandable memory. This phone has less than 8MB of memory with no provision for expansion. Take a couple dozen pictures and the memory is full, and that's before you add any applications.
