5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best values out there
I have been using a Sony 1272 CRT projector for the last 8.5 years. It has served us well and we've been pleased with it. A few months ago it started having some deflection problems and, not knowing how to fix it myself or knowing anyone around who could fix it, I decided it was time to retire the old projector. Our theater room seating is about 12' - 14' away from the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Sanyo warranty is AWFUL - stay away!
My projector lasted 4 months and 92 hours. Since I originally got the unit it faintly `buzzed' and I was in two minds about submitting it for warranty. I keep my projector in an air-conditioned smoke free environment on a dedicated projector mount that ensures plenty of air flow. I had even cleaned the filters after the first 50 hours. I never run the projector for...

This review is from: Sanyo PLV Z60 - LCD projector - 1200 ANSI lumens - 1280 x 720 - widescreen (Electronics)
I have been using a Sony 1272 CRT projector for the last 8.5 years. It has served us well and we've been pleased with it. A few months ago it started having some deflection problems and, not knowing how to fix it myself or knowing anyone around who could fix it, I decided it was time to retire the old projector. Our theater room seating is about 12' - 14' away from the 92" 16:9 screen. We have decent but not great ambient light control. I read all the reviews I could find on the Sanyo and the only real knock anyone gave it was that it wasn't as bright as some other similar projectors. I considered a couple of 1080P projectors but given our distance from the screen and it's size, I felt confident that screen door effect wouldn't be an issue. This met my specs so I went ahead and ordered it. It's now a discontinued model so it's becoming more difficult to find but got a good deal here at Amazon.

So I've got it installed now. The best word I can use to describe it is WOW! This is a significant upgrade over what I had. The brightness issue is silly because, even if it's not as bright as some other projectors, it's still way brighter than my old projector. And the sharpness and color right out of the box were fantastic. It's great to see my Blu-Ray's truly shine now. The menu system is easy to use and I tweaked the settings a little based on one of the reviews at [...]. Looks even better now. I don't think I could be more pleased with my purchase. And I'm glad I saved the [...]+ I would've had to spend on a 1080P unit as the sharpness and resolution looks great at our seating distance on that screen size.

My recommendation is that if you can still find one for under $800, go for it. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent projector for its price class, September 10, 2009
This review is from: Sanyo PLV Z60 - LCD projector - 1200 ANSI lumens - 1280 x 720 - widescreen (Electronics)
I've owned the PLV-Z60 for 7 months (100+ hours of operation) now and find it to be a very good projector for smaller screens. I have a 72" screen and find the IQ to be very good. Note: If you want a screen of 90" or bigger then get a 1080P projector. Carlton Bale has an excellent web site that discussing this resolution/screen-size issue.

My unit has a slightly noisy fan even when using Cinema mode ................ hence the 4 star rating. It certainly isn't silent like other reviewers have stated. I'll probably run this projector for another year or two before switching to a 1080P projector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sanyo PLV-Z60 Projector Review A+++ Projector, March 6, 2009
This review is from: Sanyo PLV Z60 - LCD projector - 1200 ANSI lumens - 1280 x 720 - widescreen (Electronics)
I have own this projector for about 2 weeks now PLV-Z60 Sanyo Projector. I purchased this projector purely off of others reviews and testimonies. I was looking into the Bravia Sony VPL-AW15. Which is a great projector for the price. But in my personal opinion doesn't even come close to the Sanyo. The quality, the speed, the picture in general is great. In fact it is better then my 50in plasma TV. I would recommend reading the operators manual. It helps out so much with setting it up and you find out options that you didn't even think were possible. This is a great Product!! Would recommend this for anyone wanting a home theater without spending a lot of money.

WOW! this thing is absolutely amazing. PS3 with move, Blueray DVD surrond sound system and 10 foot diagonal screen from this projector is certainly good times. I have about 1000 hours on the bulb and it look as good as day one. I cannot beleave the quality for the price. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Great Projector for dedicated home theater. Color, with some minor tweaking, is incredible and the black levels are good enough to make you believe you're looking at a huge plasma TV. At 720P people might be tempted to spend more more for a 1080p projector but if you're not going to solely use it for Blue Ray then your are wasting money. This projector will give you as good a picture as possible with Cable, Satellite, or over the air HD because all of those are broadcast in 720P or 1080i, with the majority being 720P. I am projecting onto a 100" screen and the picture is razor sharp with HD content. BluRay looks better than the theater. There are other good 720p projectors out there but I don't think you can possibly get a better one. The only thing I'd caution against is trying to use this projector in a room with lots of lights on. You can have some ambient light and it will look great, but this projector shines when you can control the light and create a theater experience. This is my 4th projector and my best one. I have a 50" plasma and this projector in my home theater room rivals the picture and actually with BluRay looks better. Get one while they last!

Great picture and setup was easy. The projector has manual lens shift which is critical with ceiling mounting. Fan is a little noisy, but not distracting. Definitely a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The upgrade I needed., February 8, 2009
This review is from: Sanyo PLV Z60 - LCD projector - 1200 ANSI lumens - 1280 x 720 - widescreen (Electronics)
The bulb on my Infocus 4805 finally blew out, after 2 years (which is great). It was my first projector and I was happy with it. It turned me on to the whole projector thing. I look at getting it repaired, but as we all know the bulb on a 2 year old projector is worth more then it is.

I went off in search of a new projector. Being the NY jew I am, I took the train over to B&H photo, an amazing photo and video store. They have about 40 projectors for sale, and you could check each on out in person. The Sanyo looked the best!!! Seriously, better then a lot of the more expensive models, the colors popped in a lit room. I checked my Gphone to see if there was a cheaper price online, and oddly there wasn't... but there was/is a 100 dollar rebate on the Sanyo making it an even better deal.

Since I got it home its been amazing for both the movies we watched today, and a few hours of xbox360. Its easy to read text on, it has a whole butt ton of color setups (I project onto a brown wall), it has lens shift which is great.. and is an over all great product.

My ONLY drawback is that I used computer speakers with my old projector (xbox -> projector -> speakers) and since this one doesn't have audio input and outputs I had to get a little mixer....

Anywas... great projector....GREAT!

Ohh and the lens cap is automatic open and close for us lazy phone

1.0 out of 5 stars Sanyo warranty is AWFUL - stay away!, August 18, 2009

My projector lasted 4 months and 92 hours. Since I originally got the unit it faintly `buzzed' and I was in two minds about submitting it for warranty. I keep my projector in an air-conditioned smoke free environment on a dedicated projector mount that ensures plenty of air flow. I had even cleaned the filters after the first 50 hours. I never run the projector for less than 1 hour at a time, since quick startups and shutdowns shorten lamp life. My previous projector (Panasonic AE-100) lasted 4 years with 2400 hours on the same lamp - it's still running and I have it back in service while my Sanyo projector is down.

After the abovementioned 92 hours, the lamp blew. It had turned off fine the night before and when I went to power back up the next day, there was an arcing, sputtering noise and the projector shut down.

I called Sanyo and organized the unit to go in for service (told them about the buzzing noise previously) - I didn't think it could be the lamp at this time - and sent it off.

I get a fax back saying my unit was repaired and received it the next day. All I got in the way of information is "Projector is fine - replace lamp". I still don't know why the fax said my unit was repaired. I only found out about the service information when I opened the projector.

I think that a lamp that was buzzing since the start and lasted 93 hours and 4 months deserves a little bit of goodwill. Sanyo only warranty the lamp for 90 days regardless of hours. A new lamp is about $300.

I worked with an excellent vendor of this projector, who contacted their local Sanyo representative. The rep agreed that it was "highly unusual" for the premature failure but would not replace it, or give any form of discount on a new lamp.

This has now been an expensive mistake. The Sanyo website has no customer service line to talk to. I feel betrayed and plan on letting as many people know of this as I can.

Oh, Sanyo, just to let you know that I am a real person, the QRP on my "repair" is 0052874

How disappointing!
