I bought this when I saw it on sale for only one hundred thirty dollars. I also first read the very few reviews and it had an overall sort of poor rating, skewed by people who seemed entirely too ill equipped to even OPERATE a camcorder? Sorry but read the low rated reviews and think a bit. There is even one now from someone who doesn't even own this product, hasn't even seen it but called Sanyo with questions and with THAT "phone" experience, rates this unseen/untouched product with 1 star! I'm sorry but that is just about as lame as it gets....
This review begins with 4 stars based upon very limited time with the camera, less than 2 hours. But I will update AND revise as experience grows to maintain a fair review based upon good experience. Not just experience with this camera, but my others. I have to say first, I find it inexcusable for Sanyo to NOT include a full owners manual! I suspect this will cause a TON OF RETURNS form justifiably confused customers. It really is just unforgivable to me for a manufacturer to do something like this on an item that requires some expertise & guidance. Having so many cameras & camcorders, I appreciate how delicate they can be and don't feel comfortable pulling, prodding, pushing everything till I get it open & accessible. I feel Sanyo is simply begging for a ton of dissatisfied consumers. Low class if you ask me and quite probably the reasons for the few very negative reviews before me.
I did this video in my back & side yard in pretty bad lighting on an overcast day. Yet with NONE of my editing software, I uploaded it "as is" & raw from the SD card directly to Amazon. Nothing fancy, just a simple handheld (shaky I know) little sample and showing how movement like walking causes some blur & artifacts. But compared to my Canon Camcorder & Sony? This has a vastly better, more crisp, better color saturation than ANY of them. If you factor in the purchase price? I feel it deserves an 8 on a scale from 1 to 5! I will take the shakiness for the brilliant color, crispness, a zoom that WORKS. Low light in my home is remarkable for the price as well. If I want to improve the picture when a tripod is not available, I can simply cut the resolution a bit and now I get less artifacts, blur etc and can bump up my final product using Pinnacle Software I generally use. With that, I can generate million dollar video on the cheap. And no more pain in the you know what CODEC conversions like I suffer through with my Canon!
So yes this camera gives you shaky video if not using a tripod. But it also gives me unbelievable definition and even does so in lower light setting. The audio is also much better than expected, it says stereo sound though I have yet to see the dual mics that are easy to spot on my Canon???? Again, turn down the recording definition a bit and you will still get a remarkable picture "for the money". Let the pictures you take be the judge. I will soon have a bunch of video up on my YouTube page as well but this camera is really a bit of a miracle for the money spent. And at least for myself, the picture looks AMAZINGLY clear & simply stunning on my Sony Bravia 46 inch AND 60 inch LCD High Def TV sets.
OK, my dislikes....
1-NO MANUAL!
2-Hard (if not IMPOSSIBLE for me anyway) to see LCD viewing screen outdoors in bright light. I really can't see what I am filming at all. My Canon is MUCH more usable here. In low light, LCD shows little or NO detail unlike my Canon which compensates & shows ALL that will be seen in recording instead of a black/blank screen on this Sanyo.
3-As another reviewer pointed out, only about 30 minutes of usable battery life on video shoots using non continuous filming.
4-Images seem "zoomed" even when backed all the way off.
What I LOVE:
1-PRICE!!!!!!!!
2-Crisp, vivid color & definition.
3-Has Macro
4-Has usable zoom
5-Batteries are CHEAP! 2 for under $7.00 (seven dollars) including shipping on flea-bay
6-When recording yourself (or self portraits) you can rotate the LCD screen 180 degrees so you see what is filming while you are sitting in FRONT of the camera.
What I "WORRY" About?
1-Camcorder manufactured in Indonesia? Is this really better than China or WORSE??
2-Battery made in Viet Nam! Is this some sort of cruel "payback"? :-)
3-Only 90 Day Warranty on Labor?????
That's it for this beginning review. I will update as I spend time with this camera. I will share the good, the bad, and any ugly I encounter. But for the moment, I just keep pinching myself to see all I have for one hundred thirty bucks delivered! If I can get past the fact a rookie gets no operating manual until going online to download a PDF, I will upgrade my rating to 5 stars. This camera deserves a solid 5 stars for it's features given its price. But I have a hard & fast rule, NO 1 or 5 star reviews based upon just a brief encounter. But I refuse to wait & see this camera take a completely undeserved bad ratings rap based upon a few people who either got confused because there were no clear instructions, or because (so far anyway), only got bought by people maybe not inclined? I am trying to be nice here.....Whatever your experience level on camcorders, I doubt you are going to get more quality in a movie for your dollar than I am seeing here. I also want to see if it lasts more than 14 months. My Sony AND my 14 month old Canon FS100 have had CCD failures. For what it is worth, this entire Camcorder costs me less with a FAR better picture than just the cost to replace the CCD on my almost new older units. What would YOU decide to do? I can buy 3 of these Sanyo camcorders for the same price as my Canon (also bought on sale). Nuff said! I'll take my chances with this little beauty. All I can say is....MAKUP! :-)
