Biography

Saosin are a California-based post-hardcore/screamo band formed in 2003. A rigorous touring schedule spread the word about the band and resulted in a Top 30 place for their debut album.

The band were formed by former members of As Hope Dies, Slayer and Open Hand. They took their name, pronounced “say ocean”, from a Chinese proverb - which approximately means “small heart”.

4.0 out of 5 stars good...not the same...but that happens, October 14, 2006
This review is from: Saosin (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
i bought the translating the name ep back in the summer of 2004 when it first came out...a friend that owns a small record label in ma had heard it and told me it was AMAZING...i went to newbury comics, bought it and was instantly hooked...I loved how Saosin blended many different styles of metal with VERY high pitched vocals...the drumming was out of this world but that's what you get when it's a former member or drum tech? of the band slayer, anyways anthony green has one of the most unique voices in music today...seriously stop and think about how much recycled s*#t is being produced and played on radio, etc. and you'll appreciate how awesome it really is...i too, like some of the other poster's on this think the album is way over produced and isn't nearly what it could have been...something else that bothered me too is that Saosin is not a good live band vocally (they played mainly TTN songs and only added bury your head, follow and feel and come close)...musically they are awesome live but vocally they were just terrible...but that's what you get for this genre of music when you go see bands like this live...while they may sound amazing on an album, it is insane to think that the singers will hit those notes night after night on a 2-3 month tour, it just doesn't happen unless you get in-ear monitors so that the board engineer can turn up your vocals and you don't strain your voice (ant green does it with circa and his vocals SOAR Live)

i guess my big let down was the fact that they lost anthony green and took 2 years to find his replacement and get stuff together and this is what came of that entire process, which in my opinion hasn't lived up to my expectations (i think part of it has to do with seeing them live too), overall it is a good album BUT only good...i give them credit for finally getting a full-length out there after losing their singer and what not...

i couldn't agree more with the poster that asks "what happened to bury your head?" WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING WHEN THEY RECORDED THIS IN THE STUDIO?!?!? I mean the new version is terrible. I'd rather they not even release it than ruin it like they did. It's slower, softer and lacks energy. The Saosin EP version is way better.

Good tracks = sleepers (wish they didn't remove the double bass, it kills it), i never wanted to (formerly new angel), follow and feel, come close and collapse

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible full length release, a triumph!, September 27, 2006
This review is from: Saosin (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
First off, I must agree with some of these other reviewers who are making excellent points; Yes the album is definitely over produced but that is what you get when you've got Howard Benson and Chris Lord-Alge helming the board. They tend to do that. Plus, if you watch the making of DVD, it didn't seem like getting Benson to produce it was their first choice anyway. Also, Cove does an excellent job of carrying on Anthony Green's legacy, but like someone else said, doesn't have quite the angry side he did, but the music stays passionate. I still hold true that Saosin AND Circa Survive (or maybe Cove and Anthony) are some of the most passionate, poetic, and solid song writiers in a long time and this record is damn dripping with excellence. The entire composition of every song is layered, harmonic in so many ways, and chaotic in the good way. I'm not going to break down every little detail, but I'm telling anyone out there considering this CD that it grabs a hold of you from the beginging, no need to let it "grow on you". There just isn't much you can say about these guys that hasn't already been said! An incredible release and I already know I'm going to wear this CD out in no time. The only complaint that I have is that they put "Bury Your Head" on here, which is an incredible song, but I think everyone has heard it by now. Should have had something else new on there. All in all, I can't stop listening to this CD. Beautiful but that is what I expected!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Melodies, Mediocre Lyrics, December 14, 2006
By
This review is from: Saosin (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
The melodies are astounding in this album, it's been a great addition to the sound of Saosin.

However the lyrics are very vague most of the time, not quite as powerful or up to par as their older lyrics, with the exception of two or three songs. I think Cove still has some lyrical maturing to do with Saosin. Maybe he's afreaid to let loose...or maybe he just isn't strong lyrically. We'll see...

The bonus DVD is alright. Slightly informative, moderately dull, and somehow Howard Benson gets more interview time than Cove Reber...which no one wants. Get the DVD for the 'Lost Symphonies' video, otherwise just get it without the DVD.
