Book Description

October 1, 1996
Jetta Mendoza Santiago is an international courier in a race against time. After successfully delivering a precious package from South America to Detroit, Jetta's client (Dracon Pharmaceuticals) rewards her by intentionally infecting her with a deadly viral disease. Dracon is conducting clandestine biomedical research in order to quickly develop a powerful new drug discovered deep in the Amazonian rainforest.

Jetta must now outwit Dracon and the wilds of Peru to find her cure.

The race intensifies as Jetta enlists every resource available ranging from Henry, a computer hacker, to Boa, a tribal shaman.

Dracon's competition has also gotten wind of the discovery and has hired a well-armed team to "ensure the company's competitive advantage."

The intense action culminates at Dracon's field operations site on a remote tributary of the Amazon. For Jetta, the options are win or die.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Computer hacking, biomedical research and the venality of pharmaceutical corporations are the set-up for a high-tech thriller that never fulfills its potential. Courier Jetta Santiago is en route to deliver a package when she is assaulted on a highway outside of Detroit. Realizing her package is anything but routine, she teams up with computer hacker Henry Beaufort, who happened to be driving by when she was attacked. Their run for cover takes them deep into the Amazonian rain forest in Peru to a mysterious experimental research lab. Assorted villains make their entrances, and the body count mounts steadily. Such potentially interesting topics as medical research and the search for miracle drugs are obliterated by arch characterization, gee-whiz dialogue and the distinct impression that all of this has happened many times before on TV. Lacking unique characters or distinctive writing, Beatty delivers merely hectic, uncontrolled motion.

4.0 out of 5 stars SAPO, by Robert Beatty, January 4, 2007
This review is from: Sapo (Hardcover)
A book, that I have read through in one go! It is written in a very comprehensive language, you should probably be familiar with a certain software terminology, as well as with the habits of a software writer and the Detroit, MI greater environment to fully enjoy the story.

Sapo grabbed my attention and kept it throughout the entire adventure. The characters are likable, the setting diverse and the challenges exciting. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sapo by Robert Beatty, November 3, 2002
By
John Perry Dancoe (Lake Orion, MI, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sapo (Hardcover)
By far my favorite among Beatty's works. Starts with and maintains a taut pace with more than one unexpected but plausible twist. Characters and character mix are interesting but realistic. A cyberpunk edge combined with, to be discrete, "other" elements that one might have thought incongruous. I like epics and while this perhaps doesn't quite qualify as one, it does have a number of epic qualities which adds to the satisfaction. Would have been twice as enjoyable if twice as long...maybe we'll see a sequel?
