I did some extensive research regarding bang for your buck in my choices of components
for a major hardware upgrade to my old desktop machine and the Sapphire HD 7850 OC edition
seemed to warrant a closer look. I installed this card on a new Gigabyte Z68 motherboard along
with a I5 2500K CPU, Coolermaster 212+ cooler and 8Gbs of Kingston Hyper x memory. The case
was Micro ATX so I needed a card that would perform well in a small case and the Sapphire does that
and then some. It runs quieter and cooler than any ATI/AMD graphics card Ive owned, so quiet in fact
that I had to double check to see if the fans were even running. Even during game play I seldom hear
the fans running on this card and temps at idle and under full load have been 26c and 58c respectively
which I find impressive.Im getting excellent FPS on every game Ive thrown at it and I haven,t seen
this cards full potential yet. AMD Overdrive allows for even higher clock speeds and it runs stable
even when maxed out which puts its performance well into the range of cards costing much more. Judging by
its performance at stock (which is already overclocked) I doubt you would ever need more graphics power
for some time to come. At about half the weight and only 2/3 the size of my old 4890 it performs around twice
twice as good. If your looking at getting the 7850 I highly recommend this Sapphire HD 7850 OC edition
for its smaller form factor, higher clock speeds and lower temps.

Edit : Its been over 3 years since my original review and this card still runs dead silent and has never given me a single problem. Ive taken the card out once or twice to blow out the dust. This has been one of the best PC hardware investments ive ever made. I realize graphics cards like most computer hardware have continued to improve but this card still does the job on every game ive thrown at it with ease.

Update 20 June, 2012: The issue described below is indeed due to the idle clock speed. The RAM and GPU clock speeds are too low. When something uses hardware acceleration (so it goes from low clock speed to high) the change in frequency causes screen flickers and other issues (jerky movies, etc). They can be manually adjusted via Catalyst's configuration files, however unlike Gigabyte which have released a BIOS fix, Sapphire are yet to do so.

Another issue I experienced with this card and something that can plague other mid to high end cards is that of coil whine. It's a buzzing, whiny noise when the card is performing something under medium to high load (such as playing games). It's relatively common and nothing to really worry about, however something to keep in mind. Cards with this aren't really defective as such, however most places allow returns as the sound can get annoying depending on where you have your PC positioned.

The card did run games well though. Mass Effect 3 ran perfectly smooth at the highest settings. So these cards can handle games extremely well for the price.

Original Review: The card runs nice and cool. Even after playing Diablo 3 for a while (at max settings) it worked well. Albeit some issues with Diablo 3 itself and vsync.

The price is excellent for such a well performing card... BUT... I did however find some annoying issues with it, which shouldn't be a problem out of the box, but unfortunately are.

The main one so far is that the screen would flicker when browsing or using some low GPU usage applications. When browsing Amazon for instance, the screen would quickly flicker on/off. At first I thought it was a faulty mouse scroll wheel, but it isn't. It's a bug with the idle 2D clock speed of the card apparently.

I am satisfied with this product so far. The performance is great, BF3 on ultra runs great and I have not had any problems with other games as of yet. Easy to install and very quiet, this card is definitely worth the cost.

Issue #1, as soon as I installed the driver from the CD that came with it, I noticed my onboard sound was gone. It turns out that because this has HDMI, it's got its own soundcard and without asking, it makes itself the default device. My monitor is an older DVI model and I like my amped speakers so I changed it back, but it would be nice to be able to let both work since I span my desktop to a big HDTV that I use for watching movies while I work or just when I need the big screen.

Issue #2 the scaling is all wrong on my HDTV (device 2). There are black bars around my picture that are almost 5 inches. Tech Support told me to go to a menu on CCC (they didn't explain what CCC was so it took me a while to figure out it's the sloppy software that came with the card) but it's not there! I found another option down there that looked like it might work for HDTV, but all it did was make my screen blink once and then back to the way it was. It turned out the scaling and overscaling thing is what did the trick. (sorry to get technical lol).

Overall it's a very fast, quiet, and lower power card. I'm happy. Just wish the software was better.

*edit*, one year later.
So I've had this for over a year now (damn I'm getting old). This thing has never failed me. Every game I've played has worked like a champ. Every rendering software has worked great too.
