Book Description

August 1, 2006
A powerful love story set in 19th century Whitby Sarah Shaw arrives in the fishing port of Whitby alone and almost destitute, fleeing her abusive husband. In desperate need of accommodation and employment, she takes a post as governess in the household of John McMaster, an eminent barrister but a hard and embittered man, whose wife died giving birth to their only son. Little by little, Sarah forms a bond with her young charge, Robin, an invalid who has spent most of his short childhood indoors, in awe of his distant father. She makes friends with a local family, and dares to hope that her new life may bring happiness ? even love. But Sarah is to discover, tragically, that it is not so easy to put the past behind her?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Fleeing a physically abusive husband, Sarah Shaw takes refuge in Whitby, a fishing port, where she finds a position at West Cliff House as governess to Robin McMaster, a crippled and sickly child. Robin's father, John, is driven to the edge of madness by having a child whose very existence reminds him of the death of his wife. Sarah sets her sights high for her charge. She teaches him how to play the piano, and much to her surprise, he is naturally talented. With Sarah's help, John and Robin actually start to bond. John also finds himself attracted to his new governess, and she to him. Everything is going swimmingly, until Sarah's husband shows up. Set in Victorian Yorkshire, the tale's isolated mansion, brooding hero, is-she-or-isn't-she-homicidal housekeeper, and young woman in danger have all the ingredients of a classic gothic romance. Fans of Victoria Holt, Janet Tanner, and Mary Stewart will embrace Hardy. Shelley Mosley
